No big problem, just irritating.

Running Windows `98, IE5.5 When I turn the computer
on and it boots up to the normal desktop, the first thing that
happens is it attempts to open MSIE.and gets the following on screen.

The page cannot be displayed click refresh button, etc.
It doesn`t attempt to dial up the internet. However when I click the
Desktop IE Icon it connects automatically and everything is normal .

If it has anything to do with this problem,in misconfig I have, as follows
( chk being a box with a checkmark in it)

    chk. SET BLASTER-A22019 D3 H3 T4
    chk @C:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVG6\bootup.exe
    rem-By Windows 98 network-ban/nc
    ---------------------- -------- ndisban
    ------------------------------- redirall
    ------------------------------- C:\WINDOWS\net start
    ------------------------------- arswait
    ------------------------------- zlogin
    rem-By Windows Setup- C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE
    rem-By Windows 98 Network- C:\WINDOWS\net initialize
    Thanks

If you posted an exact copy of what you have then I see at least one problem with your sound settings (SET BLASTER).

I'd expect to see SET BLASTER=A...... since the various parameters are (for some systems anyway and always with the = sign)

    SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T3 P330 H6 E620

    Where
    SET - a DOS command
    BLASTER - the environmental value
= sign is required else the entire line is ignored
    A220 - Port Address

And the rest specify the interrupt, DMA channel, type of card, MIDI port, etc.

    Thanks Newt,
I`ll check that to be sure. It`ll be tomorrow before I can get back. That computer is at another location.

If you are seeing IE appear after the desktop, then it won't be coming from Autoexec.

Run MSCONFIG > Startup and look for any IE or URL references.

    Newt and WhitPhil

Newt; I missed the equal sign when I copied the info.

WhitPhil; I don`t see any IE or URL in msconfig > startup. The IE does show up after the desk top is all done.

Amateur that I am I don`t know if the answer lies in msconfig, I just saw it was referred to on several querys on IE problems when I was using search to try and find an answer, and decided to check it out.
Any other ideas or info needed?

Thanks to all hands for the assistance.
After trying everything I knew how to do I finally removed IE 5 and reinstalled it. I haven`t been irritated by that culprit since.
    Ah! the glory of it!
