    Hi All,
please bear with me as Networking is not my strong point. i have tried searching this forum, but could not find my answer. i have computer "A" which is a laptop and part of a domain (and cannot be changed). Computer "B" is a desktop which is set up as a workgroup (and can be changed). how can i connect computer "A" to computer "B ". i used to connect them via workgroup, but i have never dealt with a domain before.

    thanks
    Brad

If that works for you it is certainly an easy enough solution.

Are both machines running XP-Pro? If not, I don't thing the 'local security policy' is available since I don't think XP-home has it.

Another option that should simply bypass most or all of the problems

    - log on to the domain-member laptop with a local login rather than the domain one. You can set that at the logon screen. Just make the change from domain to PC name in the drop-down at the bottom.

    - map to a share on laptop from desktop using a local user account on laptop. When you go to tools~map network drive, use the IP address of laptop and the share name as
    \\192.168.0.2\myshare
and then click the option to 'connect using a different user name' and pick a valid account on laptop to connect. For instance
192.168.0.2/administrator (and note the lack of \\ and the direction of the /).

It will help to have non-blank passwords for the account on laptop and to log on to both PCs.

Using the IP rather than the PC name will eliminate several potential trouble spots. And do use the real IP addresses rather than the example ones I've used here.

Bladeturbo - you probably didn't need that last warning about 'real IP addresses' but I'd be willing to bet that someone looking at this thread will.
