    Hi there,

I just went to update my Windows XP after performing my clean install. I went to Microsoft Windows Update and installed SP1. However, during the download, there was an error saying that the files could not be downloading and ask me if i want to retry. i retried and the same error came out. Anyone knows how 2 fix it?

    thanx

You could go to the catalog and download the SP and save it to the harddrive and try installing from there. What kind of connection to the internet do you have?

GreatGuy - rather than just a normal install of XP then applying SP1 or SP1a, may I suggest you make a Slipstreamed CD with XP and SP1 already combined and then use that to do a fresh install. Take you a little longer but you will wind up with a better OS load.

And you can download SP1a from Here

    Should I install SP1 A

Newt my XP CD came with SP1 on it. Is there anything of value in SP1 A, or is it just a bunch of updates that I've probably already installed?

SPIa will remove MS Virtual Machine from your computer. I don't know of any other significant differences. You can download VM again if you want to, after installing SP1a.

btw, Sun Java and VM work very nicely side by side in XP. I have both installed and enabled, no conflicts.

I thought XP didn't come with the Java VM. I'm not even sure if I have that on my computer, LOL. Still learning the ins and outs of XP.

An interesting aside here concerning Java.

I've seen two very recent versions of XP running. As mentioned, I think, MS no longer ships their Java versions. Consequently, in the internet options > tools > custom level, the security level options that used to be there for Java - "medium/high safety" and so forth tick "circles" are no longer there.

    Regards - Charles

    Sorry, but it will not.

If you have the MSVM installed before you apply SP1a, the VM will stay. If you didn't have it, it will stay away...

No, the absense of the MSVM is the only difference.

I guess I misunderstood this quote:
Windows XP SP1a is the same as Windows XP SP1 except that the Microsoft virtual machine (VM) is removed in SP1a.
    from this page.
because I was wondering the same thing awhile back, and I looked it up. Sorry for any confusion.
