I'm trying to increase download sessions on Windows XP PRO. If anyone has information that would help me that would be appreciated.

Surely increasing the no. of concurrent download sessions would not result in an increased download capacity or reduced o'all download time - the limiting factor is bandwidth is it not?

And - from Christer's link "Changing the maximum number of connections beyond two is a violation of Internet standards "

PeteC - you'd think so but not always the case.

At times a server doesn't seem to keep your pipe running at full speed/capacity with only a single piece of download going. True for dial-up and broadband. Multiples seem to usually run a little faster and at times, a lot faster.

I think some of the download managers do some compression/decompression on the fly as well so they have less total data packets to move.

And while you often are stuck starting over again if you have a blown download, lots of the management products have a 'resume where it left off' feature included.

I used DAP for quite a while and don't really remember why I stopped. If there were problems I don't remember them. Other than that, no first-hand with any products in some years so can't make a reasonable suggestion.

    Hydro,
    You´re welcome!

About tweaking broadband, well, I haven´t tweaked anything yet and I rarely utilize my connection to its full potential.
Some of my friends ask why I don´t download films and music and my answer is that it´s not among my interests, well, maybe music but I haven´t seen a film from the beginning to the end in ten years.
And then they start talking about broadband abuse ...... ......

It´s not only on our end that the tweaking has to be done and the speed vary over time.
When both Europe and the U.S. are up and running, I never get even close to my 10 Mbps, probably due to server load. A common figure is 500 kbps.
However, if I wait to download big or a lot of files until after midnight CET, I get the full blast.

One of my friends, who is on dial-up, once asked me to download a few Service Packs and Updates from M$, approximately 200 MB.
The first attempt was made at 4-5 PM but I interrupted after having received 6 MB in two minutes, which is as low as 400kbps.
The second attempt was made at 1-2 AM and the 200 MB were on my harddisk in under three minutes!

Maybe SpeedGuide.net - Your Guide to Broadband would be an interesting read?

    Regards,
    Christer

Thanks Newt for that lucid explanation. I've used DAP for quite a while and other than the resume function, I have had a hard time convincing people that it is worthwhile. The downloads are certainly faster but people find this hard to believe.

My explanation has involved slow or idle transmission on one download while others are still active, thereby decreasing the total of idle periods.

Same idea as yours. I'm sending them to your post now.
