I have XP Professional and have twice thus far had attachments removed from e-mails sent to me by a reliable source. The message, which appears in a beige band just above the sender's name, says this:

"OE removed access to the following unsafge attachments in your mail: (here it gives the name of the attachment) "

To the left of "OE" is a symbol that looks something like a plain door knocker. Who is OE? What is OE? I have not authorized any program to remove attachments.

I have Norton 2003 virus protection and also Norton System Works, but I have not been advised of anything like OE. And there is no explanation I can find anywhere. When Norton works to alert me of dangerous emails or attachments, a window comes up notifying me. No such message arises with the OE removal.

I am a new-to -intermediate computer user and not very savvy. Would appreciate any help you can offer.

    Thanks!

    Brenda

    OE - Outlook Express

Unsafe Attachments - in tools~options~security you have a block checked telling OE not to allow any attachments that may be unsafe to be allowed into your PC. Uncheck it.

Just make sure you are running a good AntiVirus program since you can't always be sure the listed sender of an email is truly the sender.

    Newt,

Thanks so much for sending me the answer on Outlook Express removing attachments without my wanting it to do so. I'll be careful not to open any attachments that I don't recognize.

This is of particular help to me at present since my older daughter emailed me a setup for printing wedding invitations for our younger daughter ... and it was deleted! Frustration!

By the way, I grew up in Charlotte, so you were no doubt a neighbor once upon a time (we're now in Knoxville, Tennessee).

    THANKS AGAIN!

    Best,
    Brenda

    Brenda - glad it helped.

You were probably long gone from here before I arrived. I was a professional gypsy (Coast Guard) for around 27 years and lived all over.

Wound up in Elizabeth City when I was at retirement time and liked it so stayed. Moved down here to take a different job but only at the beginning of 2000.

If I read your last post correctly, you are not using any antivirus program and just relying on being careful about email attachments. That IS NOT SAFE.

If cost is an issue, AVG makes a good free version of their program. If not, their pro version isn't expensive and has some nice features but the free version is equal in terms of protecting you from virus infections.

    Newt,

I originally did write that I have Norton 2003 Virus along with Norton System Works. I must have accidently deleted that from my message somehow.

While I'm here, I'd like to ask you another question, if you don't mind:

I use Live Update; however, I'm wondering, what with all the hackers and viruses out there, if I should access the daily downloads for updating through Symantec since Live Update only updates on Mondays and Fridays. Your opinion?

Oh, and I have STOPzilla and will have AdAware once I figure out how to make it "go." (I'm learning, but it's s-l-o-w going.)

    Best,
    Brenda

Re the Norton updates - I grab the whole 4mb+ file every day. Broadband so it's not a problem for me.

I like Ad-aware. Fairly simple to use. I also like Spybot. I run them both. Spybot finds things other than spyware but you can easily tell which is what. And the Immunize feature in Spybot has cut way back on the number of spyware problems I have.
