    Hi! It's Larry again!

I finally took the step and got a Sony VAIO P4 HT 3 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 160 GB HDD, Win XP Media Center.

With it I got Netscape 7.02, which so far, seems slower than 4.78, even on a new 3 GHz PC!

So, I may be going back to Opera, but...

...is there any way to IMPORT my old 4.78 Bookmarks and Address Book to 7.02?

I couldn't find any similar files or folders!

    All the best,
    Larry

    Hi Larry,

Nice setup, and I can imagine that you are really enjoying your new PC!

If Netscape seems slow, it could be that you need to do some routine maintenance:

    Clear your cache
    Clear your history
Go to Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Cleanup,
and clear your Windows TEMP folder.
    Empty your recycle bin
    Reboot

    Open the Bookmarks Manager
    Click on Tools | Import
    OR
Rename the Netscape Communicator 4.78 bookmark.htm file to bookmarks.html and copy to Netscape 7.02 *.slt folder.

Export your Netscape Communicator 4.78 Address Book as an LDIF file
Import the LDIF file into the Netscape 7 Address Book.

See this page for the Profiles Folder Location - Netscape 7.

Mozilla 1.5 is faster than Netscape, if you're interested in speed. You might want to give it a trial run.

Post back if you have further questions.

    Netscape 7.02

    Thanks Ramona:

Yep...New PC seems very good, but I may have to try some other browsers like Mozilla and Opera.

My Pentium 200MHz with W95 went belly-up big time and I spent two days trying to resuccitate it with no luck. CONFIGMG error which I think was caused by a series power outages affecting the RAM.

Last question is on removing the advertising page from messenger, but I imagine you've covered it on your web site.

I'll go over there and read up.

Nice to hear from you again, and THANKS again,
    Larry

    Netscape 4.78 to 7.02

    Ramona:

Couldn't find anything on your web page about killing the messenger ad.

I did get my bookmarks and my address book in.

Problem is that I no longer have Netscape 4.78 installed. I have backup copies of bookmarks.html, address.ldif and the whole MAIL Folder on a Zip Disk.

How do I get my MAIL folder into 7.02. When I tried IMPORT it asked from what profile. I no longer have that profile on my HDD. But I do have the copy of the MAIL folder.

    Best,
    Larry

    Hi Larry,

To kill the Mail & Newsgroups ad:
    Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroups

Disable: When Mail launches show the Start Page in the message area

To get your Mail from the Zip disk:
Copy all files without the SNM extension from the Zip disk

Paste the files into the Mail Account folder for Netscape 7

    Caution:
These files will replace any existing files in the new Netscape 7 Mail folder. You may first want to rename the Communicator 4.x Mail files, e.g., change Inbox to OldInbox, etc. The renamed files will appear in the Netscape 7 Mail. This will ensure that you lose no existing mail.

    Happy browsing!

Netscape Mail from 4.78 to 7.02

    Ramona:

I can't find a folder any where near ACCOUNT or with my Screen Name or ISP, under Netscape on my HDD.

I tried copy/paste directly into the Messenger Mail List (which in my case is named PBI) but it was not allowed (circle with a line through it when I dragged or attempted to paste).

There are also what are called LOCAL FOLDERS (?) but they require that I setup a Netscape Account.

So far I haven't needed one as I have my ISP ACCOUNT (PBI).

My username (excel01) or ISP account (PBI) don't show up anywhere in the Netscape folders/files. Just in the INBOX List is PBI.

Sorry to be such a pain!
    Best,
    Larry

    Larry,

You're not being a pain at all, and perhaps you missed the link for your Profiles folder location my earlier post: Profiles Folder Location - Netscape 7
    For Windows XP:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail\MailAccount

NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders

From your questions, I think that you have not yet set up your Mail Account in Netscape 7. This you must do first, before copying Mail files from 4.78:

    Open Mail & Newsgroups
    Highlight PBI
In the right pane select: Create a new account

Here is a step by step guideline/screen shots, on setting up a Mail Account with the Mail Account Wizard: Mail Account Setup. The procedure is self explanatory, and very simple to use.

Once you have set up the account, close Netscape, and Quick Launch if enabled.

    Open Windows Explorer
Navigate to the above referenced Mail Account folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail\MailAccount

Paste the Mail files without the SNM extensions, from the Netscape 4.78 Messenger folder into the Mail Account folder in Netscape 7. When you open Netscape 7 Mail & NG's your Mail should be in place.

If you have more questions, ask away!

    Netscape Mail 4.78 to 7.02

    Ramona:

    Thanks for all your help!

There was an ACCOUNT already called PBI.

    The copy/paste worked great.

Another handy feature arose in the fact that there are two trees; one called PBI with an INBOX, SENT, etc. Another called LOCAL FOLDERS which are apparently sitting waiting for a NEW ACCOUNT to be SETUP.

Previously I had worried that all of the e-mail that I had received in 7.02 prior to importing my saved old mail from 4.78 would be lost, so I took a chance and moved it all to LOCAL FOLDERS>SENT.

The copy/paste did not affect the LOCAL FOLDERS, so after copy/paste I was able to move the new mail to the PBI INBOX.

Like Magic! I was quite impressed!

    Anyway, thanks again,
    Larry

    Hi Larry,

Glad that all went well with your Mail move.
Netscape uses the Local Folders to save postings to newsgroups for example, and should be left alone.
Local Folders should not be used for for setting up a new account. That is done the same way you set up your default account.
That's is why I suggested this step:

At any rate, you are up and running, and that's what counts.
