    Hi all

looking at the spybot site; I note that the minimum RAM recommended to run spybot is 64MB for a Win98 system

unfortunately this PC only has 32MB, and is likely to stay that way (Compaq EDO RAM uses 2V7 not 3V3 and is like gold dust)

I could find no specification for "required" - just "recommended ".

Does anyone else out there have a similarly prehistoric and puny computer :(

... some advice on what works and what doesn't in the spyware-busting department would be highly useful!

I've got reasonable solutions for firewall and antivirus; but have never looked into spyware-busters up to now.

    best wishes, HJ.

    Hello Hugh,

I don't have experience with low RAM, but maybe one to handle this problem is to run SpyBot in safe mode to maximize what RAM you do have.

    Regards - Charles.

    charlesvar -

thanks for your reply - using safe mode's an excellent idea...

since posting I've heard from a friend who has used spybot OK on a W98 PC with 48MB, and I don't think he was using safe mode... so I surely stand quite a good chance.

It's often hard to tell in advance with minimum RAM limits whether they are "for real" or perhaps more of a put-off, to discourage people from running software at a crawl (=>negative advertising).

I shall give it a go and report back ~ a week or so, got my hands full with another PC at the moment

    best wishes, HJ

unfortunately Spybot didn't want to play, even in safe mode. Although I now think that installing it in safe mode might have more chance... just perhaps...

    Adaware worked fine.

    best wishes, HJ.

    Hi Hugh,

Thanks for the follow up; if you do get it working, post back.
