Sometimes I visit Japanese sites, a side effect of being an anime fan. Mozilla says in order to display the page properly, it needs Japanese language support and displays nothing but questions marks. Where can I download Japanese text support? Thanks!

Oooooooo I'm so stupid. Mozilla has it built in! I thought I had to download it like in IE.

edit: I added the Japanese language, but the Japanese sites still don't load right. Japanese is shown as available in the list of encodings to view with, but it still just shows a bunch of ??s.

shadowhawk--Windows Update should offer you (in the bottom half after Recommended Updates) several types of plug-ins for Japanese language. I have no experience whether they work for a browser other than IE, but...

This is just a stab in the dark, but could it be so that you're missing the font with the kanji characters in it.

It's one thing to be able to decode a site, but if the computer doesn't have the characters available it won't help much.

I don't remember having any Japanese fonts before. Does MS have Japanese fonts for download?

I know that it's possible to add japanese language support to IE, but what that actually does is something I don't know.
I guess it's possible that it adds a japanese font file to the system, but it's equally possible that it just adds some component or other to the basic IE engine...

Wish I had a better answer for you.

    P.S.
just to clear up any possible misunderstandings - I know that this is the NS & Mozilla group, but I was thinking since IE is so closely tied to the OS it's possible that an update to IE would have repercussions (be they positive or negative) to NS/Mozilla as well.

Just checked the MS update site and no mention is made of Japanese text support. When I used to do updates in 95/98, they were always including languages that could be downloaded.

Since you are using Windoes XP, go to Control Panel and click on Regional and Languages icon. In the Regional and Languages options window, go to the Language tab, check "Install files for East Asiang language" and clikc OK or Apply.
Windows XP will then ask you to insert the installation CD or the location of your Win XP installation file. After the necessary fonts are copied, all of your unicode capable programs, including Mozilla, will be able to display Japanese.

You can try out other settings in the Regional and Language options and see what additional features such as keyboard input are available in other languages.
