upon rebooting one time recently, a message poped up while loading windows that read something like "failure in transfering from 1% to 2%" it repeated about 4 times then windows loaded.. the next time i booted the message wasnt there.. nothing seems to different now except some icons are a little different. if i organize a folder in "list" format then the left side of all its contents are just a little trimmed. does any of this sound familure..

    #2

how can i save exactly what is on my monitor as an image, like a jpg or a giff? if i knew how to do this i could show you what im talkin about in the previous question.

    #3

im worried taht all this above is a result of me trying to install a program, 'total recorder'. im having problems installing it. every attempt i make renders this message "Unexpected error 5 in the "CopyFile(DrvTr95m.drv,C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DrvTr95m.dr2)" function (Access is denied. ) "

anybody know why i cant install this program? for those that dont know, total recorder is a program that records whatever sound is going through your soundcard into .wav format. i use this because i listen to streamed online radio shows and i like to record parts of them.. i recently re-installed windows and now i cant get this program to run again..

    thanks for all your help.

To capture your screen, press 'print screen' on your keyboard, and go to Paint, ctrl+v (or paste; right click and go to 'paste). Save as a JPEG for smaller size.

Not sure if it works on here.

Also (to capture a window only) focus on the window and press 'alt+printscreen'; then do as the instructions above tell you.

Read another BBS post while on a search and saw one with the exact same problem as yourself. The fix was checking the "system32" folder and making sure the Properties>attributes were not set to "read only ".

    google group search

It's a bit difficult for an application to install a driver into a read only folder. This should be an easy quick check.

i cant thank you all enough for your help, but your all gonna hate me..

    1. i cant capture my screen image at all, when i press 'print screen' nothing happens..

    2. i havent download or installed anything to with norton, unless i wasnt aware of it..

3 and finally, my system32 folder is NOT set to read only,, all three boxes in the attributes section are un-checked....

neither problems are life threatening,, however, alot of my icons are messed up now in folders,, and i really like recording certain radio shows... ..

    any other advice??

    Some recommended (by other members in past threads) programs to capture a picture of your screen;

    Irfanview

    Gadwin Printscreen

    Screenhunter

    And here is another way to try provided by another member;

I open Word and set it to landscape.
I get the image I want on screen.
I hold down the <Alt> key and hit the <Print Screen> key.
I switch to Word and right click to select Paste.
The image appears along with the toolbar on the Word document and I click print.
It just captures what's on the screen. For instance, if you use it to print your desktop, it shows the toolbars and all.
The <Alt> key, though, does make the <Print Screen> key capture just the top window, instead of everything showing if you have layers there.

    Hope something here helps!

    Hello bigsox!

Nothing visible happens when You hit "Print Screen" but when You open Paint or Word and hit "CTRL-V ", the screen gets pasted.

Well, on my computer anyway ......

Since I have no idea of what those icons were, and can only guess those are MP3 files. I would guess the bad of install of total recorder changed the icons., by automatic association in the setup program. Reassociate them with your current audio program.

im pretty sure the total recorder thing and the icons arent related.. firstly, my mp3's are still associated with my winamp, that didnt change, but the icons are altered now,, and all my folders, when in 'list' form are chopped off on the left half, and all the icons for say an internet explorer favorite are altered... its really weird and it kinda worries me...

ok so things got alot worse,, im kinda worried.. heres what happened so far..

i needed to install microsoft windows for some reason. i had a registered version, not burnt or downloaded and i installed it. upon rebooting i got the same message as earlier, while my setup page was attempting to update my files i got a message that said

windows could not upgrade file 1% from 2%
    1% 2%

and it repeated this about 15-20 times... after 20 times my computer booted normally.. i rebooted and the same thing happened.. (now when i boot that message doesnt come up)

next thing i do is try to open word.. when the installation wizzard trys to load i get a message

an error has occured in htis dialog
    Error: 29
    unspecified

and this small window is on top of an IE Script error window... if i close both of these windows then ican operate word properly...

next i try to go online,, pages like google, or message boards wont load and i get an erryr that reads

Explorer has caused an error in MSHTML.DLL
    Explorer will now close

this error happens whenever i try to access a page with user interaction, like a search engine or message board (i think it may be called shtml but im not sure)...

so then i try to go to system restore, and i get the same script error as when i try to load word.... and same thing goes for when i try to access my control pannel...

im kinda worried,,, anyone see any explanations? solutions? if not, should i reinstall windows? and if so, how exactly do i do that??

    thanks greatly...

oh and lonny, IE isnt on my programs list so i cant choose to uninstall it, therefore i cant attempt to use the IE repair tool..

Hi bigsox- I had the same problem- "windows could not upgrade 1% from 2%" and I cured it by renaming the wininit.ini file to wininit.old and rebooting. I was reinstalling Windows after my brother's computer contracted several viruses that I removed. Also, you can also reach the Internet Explorer Repair Tool through the System Information utility. Start|Programs|Accessories|System Tools|System Information. go to the Tools menu and you'll find it there. Good luck! Clydeo22.

    Hi bigsox

Im confused needed to install what microsoft product and where did you get it from(if from file sharing it could be damaged or can cause harm even)

ie script error when note even connected,, humm do you have Microsofts tweekUi installed

word. is this word included with works of ms office ?
    and what version ?

If you dont have any norton programs what do you have ?
third party disk tilities ( maybe you had norton in the past?)

Heres the article I think clydeo22 is refering to
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q283069

Before installing anything new and this should be done once and awhile anyway
Do a cleanup ,heres Mikes method (see below)
(ive taken the liberty to modify it)
and the cleanup any spyware with either SpyBot or adaware
I use both.Links are in my signature....
after all this will cover how to repair IE when nothing is in addremove. and it will be easyer to tell whats going on also.
    ===========
Do the below first in windows
    Configure CleanMgr to max settings
    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1

The above need only be ran once (these settings will be remembered as the default until another sageset is ran).

It will present a menu select all except compress, then Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1

As long as /sageset above has been ran on this computer from now on the /sagerun is the only thing that needs to run.
    =============================================

    These in DOS
    Cleanups
These are for 95 98 ME only!

Boot to DOS (not shutdown to DOS). While booting hit F8 to startup menu. Chose "command prompt only ".

NOTE: Win ME make a startup disk and boot with it in, choose minimul boot at the selective startup screen,, (the options to create one is on the addremove window)

Or go here from the computer you are using now and d/l the win98 boot disk http://bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm . Get the one that says Windows 98 SE OEM.

After downloading this to your HD execute it with a floppy in drive a: and it will produce the disk. Make the disk and boot from it!

Type these commands exactly hit enter at the end (do not type the notes that are in parenthesis like this). Or paste them into a bat file and put on floppy.

deltree/y c:\*.swp (may get file not found, is ok)

    deltree /y c:\windows\*.swp

    deltree /y c:\windows\shelli*.*

    deltree /y c:\windows\temp\*.*

    deltree /y c:\windows\tempor~1\*.*

    deltree /y c:\windows\history\*.*

    deltree /y c:\windows\spool\printers\*.*

    deltree /y c:\windows\applog

Remove floppy hit CTRL ALT DEL to reboot the computer into safe mode and try to find these files.
After booting back to Windows then a scandisk in thurough mode & defrag.

alright, i tried to follow the instructions, but right off the bat i had some problems.. sorry..

when i run cleanmgr /sageset:1 what happens is just my average disc cleanup, i dont know how to set that to max settings.. secondly, after it runs it doesnt present a menu with 'compress' on it.. thirdly when i run cleanmgr /sagerun:1
i just get the same disc cleanup window as before...

i ran adaware but i guess i will wait for a reply before i continue to your instructions for the DOS entries...

as for norton or tweekui, i havent installed either, but could elements of them be coupled with somehting else?? i have a feeling the problem lies elsewhere...

oh yeah, and whats 'mode',, you said 'mode and defrag', i know what degrag is but whats mode?

    sorry team.. and thanks..

one more thing, this could be very important....

i ran IE repair tool and it told me that it could not repair IE and i had to run setup again,, i guess what happened was when i was installing word it required me to install IE6,,, which obviously isnt running properly.. so i went to IEupdates and the page wont allow me to 'scan for updates', it wont allow me to do anything related to updates really,,, ?? if i unistall IE6 from my add/remove window, will it revert back to IE5, or will IE go completely... ??

try copy past this into start run
    cleanmgr /sageset:99
check all the boxs then close it by hitting OK
then whenever you run **** cleanup it will retain those settings
    or do it manualy By
    start run
    cleanmgr /sagerun:99

Scan disk in thurough mode then run defrag

open scandisk ,place a check next to automaticaly fix errors
obove that you see there a standard mode and thurough
its important to use this o say about every six mounths
It takes forever and a day , on this pc 30 gig about half full
    takes about six hours..

best to run both scandisk and defrag from safe mode, so they dont get interupted
    How start Safe mode: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406

where did you find the option to repair IE ?
[we need the full error when things dont work right]
and exact symtmes at windows update..

do these cleanups ,,one in windows the other in dos (so to speak)
and scandisk then defrag before anything else please

    Edited
Are you using the windows utility called drive space ?

mode = Safe Mode, obtained by pressing F8 repeatedly right when you see "Starting Windows ", gotta be quick, or go to Start\Run, type in Msconfig and press Enter. When that opens click on Advanced, then put a check on Enable Startup Menu and reboot. When the computer starts, you will then get the option to choose Safe Mode.

About doing those dos commands, and you do need to before uninstalling and installing Internet Explorer. Unlike 98, ME does not Restart in Dos Mode, or allow to boot to the Command Prompt. You need to first create a boot floppy, from Control Panel\Add Remove, click on Startup Disk, insert a floppy into the drive and follow the prompts.
If, when you insert the floppy and reboot the computer and it does not boot off of the floppy, you need to go into the BIOS [press DEL on most computers] and change the boot order of the computer.

You should use these commands here, note that I left out the /y. This is because in case if you make a typo, you get a prompt asking to delete, check the spelling at this time as you do not want to accidently delete the entire windows folder. Dos does not have a Recycle Bin, the files are gone.

deltree c:\*.swp (may get file not found, is ok)
    deltree c:\windows\*.swp
    deltree c:\windows\shelli*.*
    deltree c:\windows\temp
    deltree c:\windows\tempor~1
    deltree c:\windows\history
    deltree c:\windows\spool\printers\*.*
    deltree c:\windows\applog

If you uninstall IE 6, you get the previous version of IE back.
When you install IE 6 again, do the Custom Install, click on the Advanced tab, and select to Download Files to Run Setup Later.
After the download is complete you will need to run the Ie6setup.Exe file again to do the install.
This way, in the future, you do not need to be connected to the internet to reinstall IE, and go through the long download time if you are on dial up.
