    My party went well.

    I wish yours was too.

It now appears to me that this points to bad or mis-configured ( jumpered ) hardware.

    No video is Hardware related.

When you boot the machine do you get any readout at all on the screen ?

BTW. What kind of a machine are we dealing with ? Is it home built or and OEM ? ( Dell, Compaq, Gateway ext. ? ) If this has been mentioned before then I missed it somewhere.

I would suggest booting ( from power off ) to the Startup disk and using the Pause key to examine the bootup screen to see if the Hd(s) and CRDOM(s) is ( are ) being picked up correctly.

    I have a pause button

There should be a pause key on the very top row of the keyboard.

At least that is where mine is.

These illegal operations can only come when you try to start in Normal Mode.
You have got a hardware problem, what you may need to do is take out the sound, modem, network? cards, cd-rom except for the video card. Format the drive again, install windows. Install motherboard drivers first thing, then install video.
If at this point you still have illegal ops, you may have bad memory.
When it is running, add sound and install drivers, then do the same for modem and network if any.

Did you take out all add in cards except for the video?
Did you install the motherboard drivers as the very first thing?

You definitely have a hardware problem. If you can provide the make and model of the motherboard, perhaps there is a diagnostic that can be run from dos. Aida32 can identify the motherboard, however you need to have at least Safe Mode running to use it.

From this page about Windows Protection Error's.
If a real-mode driver and a protected-mode driver are in conflict.
    If the registry is damaged.
If either the Win.com file or the Command.com file are infected with a virus, or if either of the files are damaged.
If a protected-mode driver is loaded from the System.ini file and the driver is already initialized.
If there is a physical input/output (I/O) address conflict or a random access memory (RAM) address conflict.
If there are incorrect complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings for a built-in peripheral device (such as cache settings, CPU timing, hard disks, and so on).
Sounds like the CD-Rom came back to haunt.
If the Plug and Play feature of the computer's basic input/output system (BIOS) is not working correctly.
If the computer contains a malfunctioning cache or malfunctioning memory.
If the computer's motherboard is not working properly.

If you installed Microsoft Office 97 and you are using the Novell Client 32 software.

I was just thinking about when all this started. The pc started acting funny like I was losing things. I have norton installed I tryed goback to restore to a earlyer date but that didnt help.

I dont turn the pc off, just use screen saver but when I started having problems I shut it down. When I turned it on again it took about 5 to 10 mins to start. I had a Nvidia TNT video card I removed it and set it to standerd vga. It didnt help it still taked 5 to 10 mins to start. Once its running it will start back up right away.

After reloading windows it didnt help, now I cant start in safe mode.

Maybe it is a hardware problem. I'll read the links you added on your post

    Thanks again Dave

    Thanks Markp62

After looking at the links you added to your post I found that an error I have [ divice NTKERN ] seen when I got the windows protection error is a memory chip or motherboard

I'll check the motherboard website to see if I can find any to check it

I'll let you know what I find out

    Thanks Dave
