    I get the following message on my computer quite often:

    "This program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down..... "

    I click close and lose whatever is on my screen. Can anyone tell me why I get this and what I can do about it?

    Thanks.

    Hi Ovenmitt,

    We need the specific details or a "quoted" error and any other information that can be had by clicking on the "Details" button, if available, when the error pops up. It helps to know what you were doing at the time of the error, also.

    Most often it is an error or a problem that the members of this board have seen enough to know what to do. If not any additional information needed will be asked for.

    This sounds like an explorer error, but it is usually something else running that causes the conflict. The details are needed in able to figure out what the problem is.

    Hi again,
    I'm about to give you some general "could-do's ". Not knowing what your experience level is in win98, I'm not sure how much detail or explaining, you'll need. If you have any difficulty or are unsure of how to do anything, just let me know and I or another member will walk you through the "How-to "....

    Get nice and comfortable and put on your reading glasses cause the list of known causes is a bit lenghty:
    ========
    What version IE and what version mshtml.dll?

    Did you virus scan with latest dat files?

    Did you try repairing IE by using the "Repair Tool "?

    Also have a look through the known causes of this error and see if anything rings a bell:

    http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/ermshtml.htm#ERREMSHTML.DLL

    ======
    Ooops,
    Almost forgot......How up to date are you on your microsoft updates and when was the last time youdid so?

    error message

    Hello:

    Thanks for your reply.

    Just a brief background. Took my computer to a repair shop last week and had windows 98 removed and reinstalled because I was having problems.

    Everything was done there as far as installing Internet Explorer, etc.

    I do not know which version of internet explorer they installed. Looked several places (obviously, in the wrong place) and cannot find which one is on my computer.

    Do I sound dumb or what????? My knowledge of computers is next to nothing. I know the basics of... how to turn it on and do the little things necessary to use the internet. :confused:

    I have not done any updates from Microsoft since getting my computer back and I just recently installed a virus program from AVG. Did a scan from there. It said everything was ok.

    I really appreciate your help.

    Ovenmitt

    To find out version of IE, open IE, then to the toolbar at Help\About. A window should appear with information about it.
    Check your system files. Start\Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Information. When System Information opens, go to the toolbar at Tools\System File Checker, click on Start in that window. Have the Win98 CD handy, or browse to C:\Windows\Options\Cabs, if the setup files are in that folder.
    Note that there is the Internet Explorer Tool is found in the same place as the System File Checker.
    Run the Repair also, reboot as prompted.
    Just a side question, in the System Information Tool, in the larger white area to the right., on the second line, does it say "Clean install using CD" or does it say "Upgrade using CD "?

    Here's another page you can look at. Don't know how much of it is the same as what's on the page Ann posted but thought I'd put it up here anyway.

    http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#mshtml

    The first and easiest thing I would try would be to click start>run and type regsvr32 mshtml.dll . That may or may not fix it but it can't hurt. If no joy then it's time to start reading. :)

    The version of IE can be found on the IE's top menubar>help button>About internet explorer.

    My bet is it is going to be IE5.0.

    If it is anything less than 6.0, you can update your version of IE.

    THEN

    Sounds like you need to take a trip to Microsoft and get at least the Critical Updates.

    Just make sure you have nothing else running in the background while you do this, particularly your virus program. You'll need to hit your keyboard keys Control + Alt + Delete all at the same time. This brings up the "Taskmanager" popup window. You should end task on all non critical applications running. You usually end up with Explorer and Systray. Do not close these.

    To get to Microsoft Update:
    *Click your start button
    *Scroll to "Settings "
    *From within the slide out menu scroll down to "Windows Update" and click.

    IE will zoom you right over there. You have a few hoops to jump through but you should be able to figure them out.

    You may find some of the additional help-net nfo an interesting read:[Tweaking and general nfo on win98]:{b]Specifically the "getting started" section.
    http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/all-tips.shtml

    I'm almost hesitant into sending you to the archives for a study-up on past poster "Update Nightmares" but it would be wrong of me not to forewarn you. I must stress that there is no way around the need for installing, at least, the "critical security" updates. The alternative risks far out weigh any gamble you take on suffering an update glitch.

    The only debate is whether you become a "Fly by the seat of your Pants" updater and go for the gusto [letting ms have it's way with you] or install each update one at a time, being careful to install only the updates you feel you need. This process can be quite lengthy and time consuming.

    Personally I have alternated between the two methods, knowing or hoping that I could take care of any problem that should arise. Thus far I have lucked out and have not had any update glitch but others have not been so lucky.

    ===========
    To sum up your problem most likely is going to be that your Mshtml.dll needs to be replaced.

    This can be tried with an IE repair:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;194177

    Updating security patches particularly the SP! pack, [service pack 1]

    OR

    Determining which version mshtml.dll you need and extracting and replacing it, using SFC and most likely your version of IE cab files. Alternative is downloading one from the web.

    ========
    I think I'll stop typing for now and let you digest what is here. Take your time. Others may which to add their own comments and advice.

    Thanks everyone:

    I am working on your suggestions.

    Found the EI version 5.0.

    Did the file thing.... regsvr32 mshtml.dll. Got the following message ... "dllregister server in mshtml.dll. succeeded ".

    Checked the system files....
    Found one corrupt or missing file, replaced it.

    This is my progress so far. Working on the others.

    Will let you know how things go.
    Tks again

    ???

    Sorry to bother you people again.

    I am now getting the error message "this program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down" ONLY when I go to one site..... Games.com.

    Could this have something to do with the site itself or my computer?

    Tks

    It could be just that site, or something (spyware/adware) associated with that site, most likely installed on your computer(with or without your knowledge).

    If you have a spyware program, update it and run a scan. If you don't, I recommend Spybot and AdAware , as do many other members on the boards. Immediately update then run, Spybot first, 2 times, then AdAware. Delete all they find. Also recommend you get BHO and run it. Visit this site and delete what it finds.

    These are all safe programs and have backup files of anything they delete. Read the tutorials and be sure the backups are enabled in case any problems do arise (it can happen with any program). If you have any questions or do experience any problems, post back and I'm sure you'll get some quick help.

    Note:
    It appears that this thread is a continuance of this thread which is a continuance of this thread which causes people trying to help to jump back and forth from thread to thread to see whats been tried and what else to suggest. May I suggest we now stay on this thread until this problem is resolved?

    Do not start a new thread which concerns the same problem that is being dealt with in another thread which you posted. This only leads to confusion - for you and those willing to post in reply. Merging this thread. BTW Descriptive title to your threads - please!

    Have you upgrade your IE? As I recall Version 5.0 was full of bugs. A newer version of IE will still come with it's own set of problems but at least you will be using newer scripting and MS Installer...etc

    Have you made sure your graphic's adapter and monitor are correct? From the Desktop, RightClick on "My Computer" icon>Select "Properties ">Select "Device Manager" tab. Got the latest updated drivers for said same. At least the ones your computer can support properly.

    Been to your OEM support site for any patches or updates needed for your Make/Model Computer? [Such as Graphics/Sound]

    ===========
    I guess it's time to find out what Make and Model of computer you have. How much ram? What version of WIN98 [First Edition, Second Edition. Have you added any board components yourself such as graphic card or sound card?

    Thanks to all who have helped.

    First let me apologize for causing the confusion by posting a new thread. Thanks for setting me straight on that one!!!.....

    I downloaded AdAware and spybot and did the checking thing.

    Goddez1.... I have windows 98 second edition. 32 OMB ram.

    Nothing has been added to my computer.

    I have not been getting the error message this afternoon so maybe the AdAware or other suggestions have fixed the problem.

    I am now going to download EI 6. Hopefully things will go right.

    Will keep you posted

    Hi Ovenmitt,

    Can you post the details of the error for us, and also on IE toolbar, help>about IE.........give us version, cipher strength and update details? Is IE working OK otherwise? Are you now able to access games.com without errors?
