I post this problem before but did not receive an answer.

How do I convert a document prepared in words (wps) to Word for Windows (doc). There is no Help Read file for this conversion in my XP home ed.

    Thank you. Richard

Of course there is nothing in XP Help. It only has OS topics and this is an applications issue.

What version of MSWord? And assuming the .wps is Word Perfect - what version? Or if not Word Perfect, what app and what version? And do you have a copy of the app that created the .wps file?

It's not Words, but Works (the Word processing component to be exact) these .WPS files come from.

If you have Works installed it should only be a moments work to open the files and saving them down as either .DOC (MS Word's native format, though I'm not sure if Works has a full-featured .DOC export functionality - it might export to an old version of .DOC), or in a worst case scenario, a .RTF (rich text file).

An .RTF should keep most of the formatting, though it might not keep tables if such are used and any and all images are lost as well in the conversion to .RTF.

If the file is one you've gotten from a third party, and you don't have access to MS Works yourself, you basically have two options.
    1. Return the file to sender and ask him/her to save it in one of the formats mentioned above.
    2. Open the file in Notepad, or if it's too large for that you can use either Wordpad or one of the many Free/Shareware Notepad replacements available, see below.
You will have to do some cutting and pasting to a new document and will probably need to remove a lot of formatting info, but in the end you should be able to get at least the text in the document.
      [/list=1]

If you want a freeware alternative to notepad you might want to take a look at EditPad Lite.
It's a fast loading, tabbed Notepad replacement which has the ability to open several files in the same session and doesn't have the file size limit of Notepad.
And if you want more advanced features such as syntax highlighting etc. you can always step up to EditPad Pro.

Please note I'm not affiliated with JGSoft (developers of EditPads pro and lite).

I think what you want is in MSWord you would use Save As and choose Word "DOC"

If you haven't figured it out yet, send it to me by private email and I'll convert it for you. I have Works and Word.

If trying toopen these from within MSword, you'll need a converter filter. You may have these on your office cd already but.....
    Converter pack:
    http://office.microsoft.com/officeu...ID=CD010225751033&CTT=4&Origin=CD010224911033

    -------------
I'd save a copy of the original wps and work with the copy. Just in case.

From within word open the *.wps:
Use the menubar to open and browse to the *.wps document. Word will either open it because you have installed the converter previously, offer to convert it, or informs you it needs to install the converter to open the document. It may/will ask for the office CD.

Once open click the menbar's File>Save as>and scroll up to *.Doc.
