DirectX 8

Hi out there!
My son is having trouble with direct X 8 on his PII everything was working fine yesterday but now we get missing directx dll.
I ran the direct x diag program and couldnt get any ot the test to run.This is what was messaged in the dialog box: Failure at step 1(Loading direct draw DLL) HRESULT=0X887600ff(not found)
I reinstalled direct x from another disk but still have the same problem I am not sure but read somewere that you couldnt overwrite DX8 is this true? anyone got an idea what I need to do?

I would think you could install it over the top of the old but don't know for sure. I've done plenty of times in the past with older versions and had no trouble. You could try downloading and running Direct X Buster. This will get rid of the old installation if you want to try a clean install. If you run the program be sure to reboot before running the direct x install.

I just recently had to update my direct x, I was told to stay away from version 8 as many users where reporting problems. I used 7 but yes you heard right you can not uninstall it unless you riinstall Windows. But MS has released a upgrade to 8 there is a 8.1 and also a beta version of 9 which you can download from Microsoft.

Thanx for the advice ..I tried DirectX buster It still had the same problem I am going to go for 8.1 I appreciate any advice
