Hi gang, I'm in a pickle! got the new Asus k8v deluxe mobo w/AMD 64 CPU & a WD raptor 36 gig ATA/150 hard drive. My prob is no matter what I try so far I can't get the darn thang to take winxp setup! I can see it in the post & & finnaly got it formated via another hard drive in winxp, but to get this baby rolling on it's own is a mystery. Yep I got the serial cable on serial one!

The S-ATA interface is a rather new one, so I imagine you need a driver for the S-ATA drive controller to be installed during the Windows XP install.

You haven't said how far you've gotten in the install, but it works like this on a Win2K installation with the HDD on a promise ATA-100 Controller - so I should think it should be something similar on a Win XP installation.

At the start of the installation you get a prompt at the bottom of the blue field to press F6 if you need to load any third-party drivers needed during the install (and a HDD controller is definitely needed during installation :) ).
So you press F6, and here's the fun part, you probably need a floppy disk for this, at least Win2K would only accept the driver on a floppy in drive A:.

Once the driver is loaded the installation should continue as normal and you should be able to see and format the drive as usual.

Bear in mind that I've done this quite a lot on Win2K installations, but sadly I've never had to install XP on a machine with hardware newer than the OS :)
But they are very similar, so I would imagine the procedure for this should be similar as well.

    ATA hard drive

    I got it working!
Laage thx for the input but as mentioned I never got along with the install, not even thru the setup!! Here is how it goes. On a single ATA/150 hard drive do NOT try & install the third party Promise Raid control drivers. INstead cruise the mobo cd & open the VIA folder. In here are the via ATA drivers. Create a third party disk in drive A for use in WINXP setup "F6" routine. This works if you have the cable attached only to SATA-1. On ASUS mobo there are four ports, two above each other & two side by side. Forget the side by side ones even tho they are called PRI-SATA-1 & SEC-SATA. They are for RAID array. No ASUS was no help, the dude was obsest with hooking me up RAID:mad: I did the trial & error (four hours & five variations) thang. Rancher
