I don't know if this Windows 98 specific, and it isn't the world's greatest problem but on my Win98 machine whenever I right mouse button click on a file in Explorer the system always does a floppy drive seek... a bit annoying! It is not specific to any particular file type, but doesn't do this for folders. The context menus (depending upon file type) seem OK and work OK.
Any clues? I can't find anything at the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Taking the shortcut to the Floppy in the SendTo context Menu doesn't help either.

I believe that Key would cause a floppy read.

I have found that selecting a file in Explorer and Left clicking on the File Button on the toolbar does the same floppy seek.

This is not a correctly structured context menu handler key definition.
Maybe the lights went out when the key was being written.
Backup your registry, or save the reg entry, and delete it
    - let us know how it goes afterwards.

I could not detect any changes to either the right click context menu or the File button on toolbar, after deleting that key????????

The key recently deleted is structured OK.

If you do a regedit search on:
{97F51F2B-E87A-4349-84B1-2D91CB2C0C1B} you will probably find an entry in the CLSID key and in the sub-keys you will find a path to an application. If that application is still on board it may through a wobbly next time it is run. If it still on board then I'd merge the deletion back into the registry.

I do not agree with that ge.
    The @=
is missing, so it's a key and not a key entry.

    D. Smith - no change on a reboot ?

    regards

I agree it's a key and I suspect that the default value of @=" " was not posted. It won't be the first time someone has not Pasted the full story - its easily done.

I still recommend a regedit search on {97F51F2B-E87A-4349-84B1-2D91CB2C0C1B}.

If an app goes down in a few weeks time it will be a heck of a job sourcing that problem.

If the search proves a waste of time then fine, but it isn't really a waste of time to confirm a valid deletion. If it isn't a waste of time then, well.....

That key has no value set, and occurs in several places in the registry - it has something to do with McAfee's VirusScan Shell Extension / Context Menu. In the other locations it occurs as a value set for various Drive, File, Folder ContextMenuHandlers. Rebooting in the absence of the key didn't solve my little problem. I have restored the key & not bothered to check how it affects the VirusScan because I don't believe it is related to the problem. I need to find a key perhaps related to a long ago uninstalled bit of software that has a floppy seek value in its context menu handler, but there are too many to step thru one by one.

What data do you have associated with NoDriveTypeAutoRun in the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer?

Just had a thought. My second tea of the day is probably the cause of that.

That 'FileSplit' entry - is that for splitting large files to copy onto more than one floppy? When was that installed? Is it that doing a floopy seek on right clicking files?

Very likely McAfee is the problem - try posting this thread on the
    AntiVirus Board.
If you uninstall McAfee does the problem resolve itself ?

The problem is neither Filesplit nor McAfee. Have have uninstalled each individually and rebooted to the same problem. A friend has a Win98 PC with both these but no problem. I haven't given up yet - I will try to compare registeries.

    Fixed!

FileSplit seems to have not uninstalled correctly, or may be originally installed incorrectly as I said I know of another similar m/c that is OK. I deleted every key relating to FileSplit that was left after uninstalling and... voila problem fixed!
Thank for your help guys. Good work.
Sorry for the delay but I was distracted by our Xmas/Summer holiday break.
