    I have recently installed a router(D-Link) to network my two pc's Comp#1 is XP and comp#2 is ME.
    the Router is working fine ping tests an all ok. We are even able to play games between the two MOH, Halo and more.
    XP will not see ME in windows and all the sharing is turned on.
    My network is called Mshome. So when I go to \My Network Places\Entire Network\Microsoft Windows Network\Mshome it hangs for 30 seconds then says...
    Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
    A list of servers for this workgroup is not available.
    ok

    any suggestions would be appreciated.

    You need to have the ME PC require a logon with username and NON-BLANK password and then add that username/password to the local users on XP.

    Also a logon username/password on XP would make things a little better although ME does not know how to check for it and handles the whole security thing very differently from ME.

    Add a new user to an XP PC - Contol Panel~Administrative Tools~Computer Management~Local Users and Groups~Users

    I've never seen XP-home and had to rely on what Microsoft had in their how-to article. XP-Pro does it exactly as described.

    I know there are some security things that XP-home will only do if you boot to safe mode and log on with your administrator account and the local users and groups may be one of those. Should be worth a try.

    But ME should be willing to have a PC connect without that so if you have a folder shared on ME then from XP, try
    start~run~\\ME-PC(name)\Share(name) and see if it opens a windows explorer session with that folder opened. So if your ME PC is named ME-thing and the share is named Share then
    start~run~\\ME-thing\share

    Hi Dad, I am having a similar problem. See the following:

    have a unique problem with my Home Network. When I attempt to access the computers I get a message that says: "Network is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource ". Here are some specifics about my setup:

    My network was working before I had to reformat and reinstall XP on my second machine;
    Both machines are running XP Home;
    I have share activated on both machines;
    I have updated my firewall software to allow accessing;
    I am using a router;
    My workgroup shows the drive when I click on disconnect, so I know it's there;
    My drives are mapped
    I have separate folders that show in My Network Places;
    I can access the folder information when I open the files;
    I can't see the shared printer that I have installed. share is turned on;
    I have turned on all the XP services;
    I turned off XP's firewall protection program;
    and on and on.

    I have simply run out of things to check and do. I just can't access through the network when I click on the network name. I have seen the message before, but a simple restart of the computer solved the problem, but not this time. Does anyone have any thoughts.

    I can at least see the C drives on each machine, because I have the folders showing in My Network Places, but when I try to open the network it fails and I get the same message you are. I was running fine before I reloaded XP on the second machine.

    I can tell you that if you have stopped any of your XP services you may want to check them out. I couldn't see the network or files, but when I started the workstation service I can at least see the C drives on each machine. My main problem right now is I want to share my printer and that's not working right now.

    I can also tell you to stop your firewall software if you are running any or add the IP addresses to them. Firewall software can cause network accessing problems.

    Well I was hit by the Msblast.exe virus. so I've been busy.
    I finally re-installed windows in hopes that it would fix my problem but that only lasted long enough to get me excited.
    When the fire walls kicked in again I new somethin was up!!

    Control Panel\Network Connections\
    right click local area connections
    select Advanced
    Uncheck that Baby (ICF)

    Hope this info helps future pain staking networking.

    I know a bob martin in tally i thinks?

    Hi All,

    I don't know if you ever solved your problem with this but I'm having the same message and I have no idea what to do. I'm running XP pro on both machines.

    How do I get administrators privileges on the computer I'm trying to access through my main computer. I'm not that experienced so plain and detailed instructions would greatly be appreciated.

    Many thanks for all your help.

    :confused:

    Not real sure what you want to do, but you can gain Admin. rights on the other computer by going to to the other computer and open the Control Panel and select User Accounts and create a user with Admin. right.

    You can also go the other computer and open My Computer and right click on the C drive or whatever file you want to share or gain access to and click properties at the bottom. You can then select the sharing tab and check the box(es) in the Network sharing and security area at the bottom and click apply.

    You can also use Remote Assistance to gain access to another computer through the internet, but I havn't use it.

    As bobemartin said, a user account on PC-B that has admin rights and is an exact match for the username you log onto PC-A with will give you admin rights to PC-B provided that you are logging on to PC-A with both a username and non-blank password and that the PC-B account has the same password.

    There are a couple of other ways to do it but they require you to do something different (runas for instance) each time you connect so only makes sense if there is a problem with adding an account to PC-B.
