the CDRom door opens while windows98se starts and remains open. Usually these type of annoying behaviors disappear by reloading the O.S.. Is there a more specific way of correcting it??
    Thanks for any help.

Haven't come across it before. It may be a program that loads at startup. Try running msconfig > startup and unchecking any programs that may be related to accessing the CDrom.

Try what Mattman says, if that doesn't work, try uninstalling the drive from device manager. Have the latest drivers available on reboot, Windows should find the drive then install drivers.

    Might fix it. Might not.

Had an HP machine at an office I worked at last year. CD drawer would open and close randomly. Drove me nuts. Tried everything except reinstall of OS. Would quit for a while after an attempted fix, then start all over again. Far as I know, that drawer is opening and closing as I write this.

    Good Luck

Then again, it simply could be a defective drive.

CDr drives use the built in Windows drivers (apart from some very old drives). To reinstall the drivers, remove the CDr in Device Manager. Shutdown and disconnect the drive. Do a full boot without it. Shutdown, reconnect the drive and boot again.
    Well worth a try.

Could also check the manufacturers website for any firmware updates for that drive.
Firmware updates are the same as flashing the BIOS on a motherboard. Make sure you have the correct ones for your drive and follow the instructions carefully.

Thank you all for help and sorry for delay in answering.
I have tried the suggestion of Mattman but without any apparent change. Then I cancelled any spy programs and I cleaned my register by eliminating (by hand) all the keys corresponding to any program not used anymore.
At the second restart the problem disappeared.
I still however do not know the specific reason.
    Sorry for that.
