Hi all, I'm really puzzeled again and need some help, opinions, advice, and somebody to figure this one out.

Just getting this board set up (SOYO KT400 Dragon Ultra Platinum)
and starting to load perifials and their drivers. On board USB2

Have HP 3200C USB1 scanner. Machine up and running, plug in USB scanner to USB hub (where it used to be on old board), Load drivers and scanner software, all ok. Scanner works as advertised.

Next boot, machine refuses to boot. Get BIOS screen up to point where BIOS version appears, next line says "memo" then nothing. No mem check, no IDE drive detect, NADA.

Since scanner only change since prior boot, unplug scanner, hit reset switch, machine boots.

Plug scanner in while machine up, get audible signal, "found new hardware" message, "new hardware installed and ready to use" message, Check device manager, scanner there, no caution. Check scanner function, OK.

Shut down machine, reboot, machine refuses to boot. Stops at same point, HDD light lit for 40 seconds, then goes off. No more activity. Try clearing CMOS, no help. Unplug scanner, machine boots. Pull cable from hub and plug into machine's port. No help, machine won't boot.

Try uninstalling, reinstalling, same results. All HP drivers current.
Last ones for this scanner published in 2002, are WHQL certified.
Searched HP's site, couldn't find any reference in FAQ or Knowledge base.

Scanner runs fine when plugged in after boot, machine refuses to boot with scanner.

Have two other USB1 devices, no problems. Uplugged them, HP only device plugged in, no help.

    Anybody??? Help will be appreciated.

Had a similar, but not so extreme problem with a USB card reader. With USB 2 drivers loaded the card reader would run, but other USB 1 posts stopped working. Only way I could get round this was to unload the USB 2 drivers and run all USB ports as USB 1.

Try unloading the USB 2 drivers, if installed.

Pete: Deleted USB2 drivers, no boot with scanner plugged in, on reboot with scanner unplugged, XP reloaded the drivers. Going round in circles.

    Thanks for the help.

Did some hunting - read that this is an HP re-badged Umax 1220U Scanner and found this for you
    http://www.scanner-drivers.com/drivers/83/83645.htm

Link is to driver from UK site, as Umax in the states apparantly wants money for the same drivers. Worth a try if it resolves your last remaining (fingers crossed) Boot issue. You might want to check out specs first on Umax site to confirm this is the same scanner - can't always believe what one reads.

    ;)

Rockster, you are a rock as always. Yes, those drivers are for my scanner, Installed, no help. Scanner runs ok on these drivers, same as before, just that machine won't boot with scanner plugged.

I think that as the BIOS can't run to completion, there must be some other problem, BIOS settings, memory, or something like that.

I'm going to try moving memory in slots, maybe??

    Or some obscure BIOS setting??

Whoooa - you lost me .... what do you mean BIOS run to completion?

Best slots for memory on that board are #1 & #3 - no ifs, ands or buts - very well documented among scores of users and if memory serves me right (no pun intended) even on the Soyo FAQ site.

May just be a question of needing XP SP1 and the USB driver updates - but I'll admit, your comments now have me confused. There are also a couple of VIA USB filters that you can investigate and potentially install. And, you need to have USB enabled in your Bios settings and give them their own IRQ.

    ;)

After-thought edit : In Bios where you can select PnP OS installed - select NO. Then enable reset configuration and F-10 your way out.

Getting ahead of myself here but you can also try removing all vestiges of those scanner drivers, run RegCleaner and pull out all the remaining **** they left in the registry (have scanner unlugged from machine) reboot once then shut down, reconnect scanner and restart - when XP finds new device - cancel its search for drivers, then when all is calm, manually install your drivers and scanner software and then try rebooting.

    ;)

    Hey Rockster:

When starting machine with scanner plugged in, the machine does not run through the BIOS.

It gets to the point after listing the current BIOS edition on the first BIOS screen, then starts memory check. It gets to "m-e-m-o" the first four letters of memory check and stops dead. It does not do the memory check or the IDE drive search. Cursor does not flash, Pressing "delete" to enter BIOS non functional, cntrl alt delete, no reaction.

Sorry if my post was not clear.

If the scanner is not plugged in, machine runs through memory check, finds IDE drives and runs through RAID boot screen, then boots quickly and normally.

I have VIA filter installed, service pack 1 installed.

Currently have memory plugged in to slots l & 2. Bank interleave disabled. Result of MSFT erronious advice for curing long boot time problem.

Not doing anything to machine 'till I read your next post.

    Thanks for the help

    Martin

Edit: Sorry, mistated scanner model, it is not a 3200, it is 2200, however, the drivers loaded are correct for 2200.

    OK - we'll try .....

Try removing software and the run RegCleaner as mentioned above, but first .........

You can move memory to #1 & #3, enable Darm Bank Interleave and you can first try 2 way, then 4 way - should handle 4 way without a problem but smarter to take smaller steps to be sure.

As mentioned long time ago, memory on this board quite sensative - I even had problems with Crucial PC2700 on a KT333. (am running Corsair XMS Low Latency PC 3200 on my KT400 - 2 sticks of 512 Cas2 2-6-3-2 with T1 Timing) Leave your timing and other memory settings alone for right now and I'll assume you set with auto when setting up initially. Future reference best info available here:
    http://www.rojakpot.com/default.aspx?location=1

Back on subject - set your Bios to no Pnp OS on Integrated Peripherals (something like that) page and enable a reset of configuration data (next line after Pnp OS yes-no). I'd do this after you try uninstalling and after you used RegCleaner and rebooted with scanner disconnected from Machine. Then follow other instructions re hooking up scanner with machine off, skipping XP driver install and do manual install. Don't know if this is the solution but it would be my next step.

Good luck - will anxiously await results.

Mattman - c'mon back to the dance - help needed - ladies asking for you.

    ;)

Sorry for the delayed response on this, an unfortunate life changing event had occured.

Father in law, good friend and trusted confidant died suddenly of a heart attack Friday morning. Fixing his morning coffee, fell over dead. Rescue arrived within 7 minutes, did all they could, too late. He was 73. I am very sad. I will miss him.

Lots of relatives and family friends have been in from out of town. Have not had much time to mess with computer. Now trying to help mother in law cope.

Will get back on USB/scanner problem.

Give all loved ones a hug today and every day, you never know.

Cousin here for funeral at house, tell him the problem, says try plug scanner to MOBO, front USB connections actually another hub.

Plug scanner to MOBO USB socket, rear of tower, problem solved!!

    Somebody explain that to me??

Again, very grateful for this BBS. Thanks so much to all.

It's a fact - some USB devices will not run through a hub, powered or not.

Come to think of it I saw a post to this effect re. film scanners on a photo forum.

    Strange.

Very sorry to learn of your father in law's passing. My prayers will be with you and your wife. Kind of makes anything computer-wise pretty trivial.

Rockster: Yes, put things back in perspective. Appreciate your sentiments, thank you.

Saw father in law evening before, not a clue. Hug your loved ones today, you never Know.
