My system is not sending the correct information on my operating system to web sites. I am running XP Pro. When I access windows update, I am told that my operating system is unsupported, that i must be runnig a microsoft OS to use this site. Other web sites, ie Weatherbug.com, tells me that I am running a mac or unix system, that their software will not work on these systems. I assume this is a corupted registry entry or such. My system information is all correct. It lists Windows XP Pro as the operating system and all other information is correct. Is there a setting I need to investigate, or a setting I need to change?
    Thankyou
    DaveMo

There is a possible answer to your problem here

    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

Scroll down to "When attempting to access the Windows Update Web site you receive the following message: Thank You -- you must be running a Microsoft windows operating system in order to use windows update "

If you can't get onto the site this is what it says :

"When going to the Windows Update Web site located at
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com, the page immediately redirects you to
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/thanks.asp, which says "you must be running a
Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use Windows Update." This occurs if both a third party firewall and the built-in Windows XP firewall are enabled at the same time.

    Resolutions:

Please delete the following registry key. Be sure to export this key to a safe location first

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform

This may be resolved by uninstalling the third party firewall.

The system administrator may have made changes to your corporate firewall/proxy that will not allow Windows Update to operate properly. Please contact your system administrator and have them identify Windows Update as an excluded site on the firewall/proxy.

    The Windowsupdate Trouble shooter lists:

But it says it applies to:
    • Windows 2000
    • Windows 95
    • Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition
    • Windows Millennium Edition
    • Windows NT4

Try it and see if it works.

It could also be that you have software that prevents the "referrer" information to be sent. Norton Internet Security is one which will do this..

I don´t know if it is the same but on one site that I use, where there is a separate login for administrators, NIS will prevent this login dialog and I have isolated the culprit to the Ad Blocker. If that one is disabled, the login dialog works.

Well, did locate the problem. It is Sygate Pro. The Firewall masks my identity so update cannot resolve my operating system. It also affected some other web sites I browse. By turnng off (exit) the Program, I was allowed access. (Allowing full access via the Firewall did not work, had to exit it.) In line with the answers to my post, does anyone have any ideas if the registry edit that was suggested will overcome the firewall problem? I really hate to browse with my Firewall off.
    Thanks for all your help.

    Even better than WinUpdate

    When this problem is solved:
Try the MBSA (Microsoft Baseline Security Analyser).

This MS tool helps You to keep Your System patched and secure.

It sometimes won't recognize installed patches and claims still to install them, especially on non-english installations (the tool is english only).
But as far as I am concerned this is the only downturn. You still would know You installed them.

    It's a fine tool.
    Just try it!

    DaveMo,

I've no idea if deleting the registry key will solve your problem, but why not try it? Quite safe providing you export the key as suggested so that it can readily be reinstalled.

For those who want to download the MBSA, but can't read German, use this link.

    Hello DaveMo.

*The Firewall masks my identity so update cannot resolve my operating system.*

I'm using Sygate 5.5 personal free version in conjunction with Proxomitron. In my case its Proxo that causes your problem for me. Had to make an exception for MS update site in Proxo to get around it. Works fine.

ZAPRO also hides referer info - running it on a 9X system - and never gave me a problem with MS.

    Regards - Charles

EDIT: Just checked ZAPRO - does not hide the browser version or the OS, what it does hide is where I've been.

Here is the link to Sygate's forums http://forums.sygatetech.com/vb/

Maybe a way to control the "hiding" function.
