I recently discovered a virus on my PC that uses Windows 98 second edition. I was able to delete all the files that contained the virus excpet for on C:\WINDOWS\dmsw.exe. In the MS-DOS mode I erased this file which I am pretty sure (but not positive) was placed in this folder by the Worm-32 virus. Now, whenever I try to start Windows I get a message that dmsw.exe cannot be found and that this file is needed to execute file types "Application." Does anyone know if this is a file that y Windows system needs. If not is there a way to stop this error message? Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi Bob6592 - Welcome to the Board :)

A search on my Win 98SE box does not show that file - nor does a Google search.

What concerns me is the way in which you apparently eliminated the virus - by manually (?) deleting files.

I strongly suggest that you download the worm removal tool(s) from your antivirus supplier and run them.

You may also like to download Startup Control panel - this applet will show everything that loads at startup and gives the option to disable oe delete.

I did a seach of my computor didn't find that file. Run msconfig and see if that file is in startup, if so uncheck it that should stop the error message. You also can remove it from your regestry

    See Rollin Rog's post here

It'll fix you up in a second.

The file IS the virus itself and hooks itself onto the Registry EXE key to ensure that it will run, everytime YOU run an EXE file. Now that the virus is gone, windows is complaining because of the missing file referenced from the registry.

Since the Swen virus also plays with the COM/BAT and a bunch of other keys, the INF file above will fix them all.
