We need more detail to help with this one. Your event logs should have it.

Svchost.exe is a 'wraper' service that will be running some number of other services that you don't see. No good way to tell what is in there either. You can have from 1 to 5+ instances of svchost.exe running and each will have different applets it is running.

Think of svchost.exe as the WinZip of services but with no way to unzip or even to look within the zip file.

If the name of the service is SVCHOST.EXE then you need to figure out what services it is encapsulating:

    http://www.ultratech-llc.com/KB/?File=SVCHOST.TXT

If the name of the service is SCVHOST.EXE (with the C first) then you have a virus. Just had to clean some boxes with that this week.

Thanks Logik. I'd read what I expected (svchost) rather than what he actually typed (scvhost).

    You're welcome.

If I didn't just see it myself on Thursday, I might have overlooked it.

I sure overlooked it for nearly a half hour when staring at it in a task list... :)

yeah we had this error and it was a variant of the ms-blast virus causing it.
