What is the difference between XP "Restore" and backing up the registry via "File > Export" in RegEdit?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

I have never been able to find a restore point that will restore. Maybe this is another issue,

Do you use Pro or Home?

Search the BBS for relevant SR info. Sometimes, it just needs reset to get going again.

Backing up reg files on XP is time consuming and awkward, at least in my experience. You could enable the ASR if you have Pro.

Maybe a third party software like GoBack or Ghost would meet your needs.

So you cannot get system restore to function I have used it a few times and find it excellent.Why do your restore points not work?

Are you monitoring multiple drives? If a drive, even it its not the system drive, runs out of room, SR will behave "badly ".
