    Hi Guys,

I was trying to back up my Netscape 7.02 profile. I went into the c:\windows\application data\mozilla\profiles\default\xxxxx.slt\ folder and I deleted every .rdf file I could find in that folder, including those in the mail folder and NIM folder, and all other sub folders. I also deleted the history.dat file, history.mab file, the XUL.mfl, cookies.txt, cookiesperm.txt, panacea.dat. I noticed that the cookiesperm.txt never came back.

I guess what I'm asking is what can safely be deleted? After deleting all these files everything seems to work fine.
But is there a guide to what can be deleted and what needs to be saved? I also deleted the cache folder as well. I'm trying to make the profile as small as possible to back it up to a floppy and as of now it does.

Edit: I found out what cookiesperm.txt does. It stores the exceptions when you have popups suppressed. I noticed that most of the files have returned that I deleted, except for history.mab file. What is this file for? If someone could help me, I'd appreciate it.

    Look here for a list...
    http://gemal.dk/mozilla/files.html

Randomly deleting files is probably not a good idea, especially if you value a working profile. ;)

If you are trying to back it up to floppy you might get by with the following files:

    bookmarks.html
    somenumber.s
    somenumber.w
    cookperm.txt
    cookies.txt
    user.js
    prefs.js
your mail ( in the mail directory )

    * I may have forgotten some files as I do not use the mail client... *

Using a zip program might help, as some of them can span a large archive over several floppies. If possible, a cd burner/zip drive/anything more reliable is recommended.

history.mab = Collected Address book [Window -> Address Book -> Collected Addresses]

Well that helps a lot, thanks!

One last question. If I wanted to put all these files back in a new profile, let's say I uninstall Netscape 7.02, restart the computer, delete c:\program files\netscape\ and delete the c:\windows\application data\mozilla folder. Then I reinstall netscape 7.02, how would I get my profile back in it? I ask this because I know when you reinstall netscape it creates a new .slt folder.

There may be a better way, but what I have done in the past is:

    back up profile
    uninstall mozilla
    reinstall mozilla
copy backup profile files in the new profile directory (except mail)
start mozilla and hope I didn't miss anything...

    create mail accounts
    close mozilla
copy mail files to correct accounts
    restart mozilla
    hopefully mail is available. ;)

don't forget to back up your rules.dat file if you use mozilla/netscape mail... this is your mail filter file.

If you wish to use you old prefs.js file you will have to edit it with a text editor and correct all the paths, since the *.slt names are not the same.
