I have an Iomega internal zip drive. It is Zip250 Alapi I switched to XP home edition and have had continuous problems. I have no 250zip discs at all but have used the old ones from my previous computers
.It previously worked fine on the same computer with Win98se installed. Now I have problems retreiving pictures saved on the disc. The computer displays what is on the disc when I try to retreive data, particularly pictures, the entire machine seems to freeze with the zip light on and I can hear it chattering away trying to open it. I must do a complete reboot to get out of it.Sometimes it works well. Usually other data it will open.
I double checked for proper drivers and they are all right. Any suggestions?

One thing occured to me is could any of the pictures on the discs be corruped and causing this? If so How do I check them? Can I use the XP's scan check and defrag?

I am no expert on Zip disks/drives although I have used them in the past.

AFAIK the only way of detecting a corrupted file is to try and open it, usually a message of sorts appears to this effect.

It maybe that the boot sectors of the Zips are corrupted - I doubt that defragging would help, but try.

Found this on the Iomega site which suggests that you can defrag Zips -

    http://www.iomega.com/support/documents/11768.html

Thinking back does not IomegaWare have some sort of facility to check Zip disks?

There again I seem to recall some conflicts between XP and IomegaWare - have you checked for an update on this.

My advice would be to transfer those files you can off the disks as and when the drive responds with a reformat in mind when you have recovered all you can.

If you can open a Zip try transferring the files to another Zip.

Can't really help any further - maybe someone else will chip in.

David B: the new operating system is not recognizing the format from the old computer.

    That's real tough :(

Any chance of linking that Zip up to a 98 m/c or finding one with a Zip installed, copying the files to HD and burning to CD - or - loading 98 to a separate partition on your drive - see ?here

Pete's got your solution - go to a computer shop that can copy your stuff to CD's or something else readable for you. Then format those discs and you should be able to use them with your new setup.
    ;)

Does this answer smell like flim-flam to anyone else?

So what Iomega is saying is that a Win98-formatted zip disk cannot be recognized by an XP machine with a zip drive???

I'm glad that other standards are not so OS-dependent!
