I'm currently using Internet Explorer, (after switching from Mozilla because of to many incompatability issues with various web sites) and I'm having problems downloading Java. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what did you do to overcome this.

    Hi MICK.

Can you give us a few more details? What version IE? Connection type? Where you're d/l from? What kind of problems?

PeteC, I removed java as per instructed on the windows-help.net page. I Tried downloading and installing JVM from sun with no luck. Here is the exact error as it appeared on screen.

Java 2 Runtime Environnment, SE v1.4.2_01 Install
Error 1316. A network error occured while attempting to read from the file
    http://java.sun.com/webapps/download/Getfile/1.4.2_01-b06/windows-i586/Java 2 Runtime Environment SE v1.4.2_01.msi

Additionallly, I'm running Internet Explorer 6.

Somewhat puzzling - are you downloading to the HD and installing from there? Incidentally the URL in the error message is not recognised by Sun.

I would disconnect from the Internet, disable firewall and antivirus and try to install fron the HD. Went sweetly on my m/c some months ago - also IE 6, Win XP Pro.

PeteC--That Windows-Help.net article says to remove MS VM, which results in a message saying that after such removal Internet Explorer will not be able to download files from the web, and then to download Sun's Java. Huh?

I use VM and Sun and they don't fight. Why not use both, too?

I also use both without conflict. At this point, since he removed it and as Jim pointed out, now cannot download from the internet, couldn't he install/reinstall the MS VM via the IE6 sp1?!

MS VM gets uninstalled with SP1 automatically. You don't get a choice to keep it. But, you can download it from the net and reinstall it, and it does work fine side by side with Sun Java.

The name of the file is MSJavWU_8073687b82d41db93f4c2a04af2b34d.exe

and I haven't the faintest idea right now where I got it...that was many many crashes ago! LOL! But if you can't find it, email me privately, and I'll send it along.

noahdfear--As PeteC said in the earlier thread
"FWI - SP 1 for XP has MSVM (Java), SP1a does not - MS pulled it as a result of the court case with Sun. "

My thought was, if MICK had installed SP1 prior to MS removing the JVM, the zip file and/or install should still be intact and he could reinstall it. Then he could again try getting SunJava.

That error is just some BS. Of course the JVM isn't needed to download anything! How would a WinXP system without Java be able to download anything then?

Not true! If JVM was installed prior to installing SP1a, it will remain in place!

There are several possible causes. For one, try to clear out your TEMP directory of all possible files and reboot your machine.

To find the location of your TEMP directory: Right-click on My Computer and select Properties. Click the Advanced tab. Click the Environment Variables button and look up the location for TEMP under User and System variables.
