I've been getting the newsletter for some time, and I thought of you folks with this perplexing little problem.

Currently, when I ask my system to restart, I go to blue screen, and it does not shut down.

I installed the October updates, and the icons on my desktop retained their MS symbol rather that the appropriate log. In trying to figure that out, I found that by clicking on My Computer, then Disk C, all of the logos would come back.

When I heard about the revised patches, I downloaded the ones WinUp told me I needed, and the icon problem went away.

That problem has returned, along with the restart issue.

I'm a security freak, so I have ZA, Norton 03, Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard, Spybot and Adaware, and I update and run them weekly. Dis that anew in trying to dx this problem, with no results.

    Any ideas will be appreciated.

Is advanced power management (contol panel) enabled?

Are there any event log entrties that show up at the time you try to restart?

I cannot find "advanced power management" (Yes, I am embarrassed...I even went to help topics, but I couldn't find it).

No, I didn't get an event log, which rather surprised me.

All of a sudden, my print screen program is fouling up, so I'm not able to send captures. I went to event viewer, system, and found a few errors for Dhcp, and a bunch of errors for service control manager.

There are also some scattered errors for mouclass.

In the applications event viewer, there are many errors for the true vector engine, and no others.

    Over my head, now.

    Thanks.

I woke up this AM to some revised MS patches. I installed four of them and, viola, the machine restarts, all the icon logos come up, and the system has also lost a little pause that it had developed.

So, thanks to all (and all those involved in getting those patches up to speed).

    I'll visit again.

Glad the patches got things working better.

Some of the event log messages don't sound too great. At this point I'd suggest dumping what is there and then taking a look in a week or so to see how things are going post-patch.

As to the APM, I was looking at XP-Pro and 2K may call it something else. I'll look at a 2K box at work this afternoon and tell you how/where you should be able to find the power settings. You may want to set things more to suit yourself.

Good advise! As a matter of fact, I did the dump this AM, so my poor little brain didn't get pre and post patch mixed up.

I would appreciate the info on the power...I've never really had the knowledge or reason to go there, but I will willingly go if it might improve things a bit. (This W2K box has been the best experience that I have ever had.)

    Thanks again,

    John

In HELP and the index tab, take a look at Power Options.

2K will allow most of the setting changes but it isn't centralized or as simple as in XP.
