I've been running NS 7.01 (CK- SillyDog) ever since it was released. Just recently I've been experiencing some strange problems that I can't seem to correct.

    Here's what's happening ........

When NS is first loaded all is fine. After a short while I seem to loose the ability to cut and paste aything. I also loose the ability to use the cursor control keys, (backspace, arrow keys, home, end, etc). I can insert the cursor into a text line with the mouse, but that's it. If I close NS and reload, it works for awhile, then the problem starts happening again.

This only happens in Netscape. In any other application I have complete and normal control.

Any ideas on how to correct this problem??

    Welcome to the Forum, Grenadier!

    Hi Grenidier,

My first thought was the W32.Blaster.Worm However, as this problem is only occurring when using Netscape, maybe not.

Does this occur when copy/cut/pasting a URL, only, or just images, or is it anything you try to copy/cut/paste?

What happens if you use Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V, or Ctrl+X and Ctrl+V?

    Ramona,

    Thanks for your reply.

No, it's not the "Blaster worm" I checked for that myself. Also, since the problem is only within NS it sorta rules that out as being a cause.

It does not matter what I try to cut and or paste. It happens with text within a web page, an URL or anything.

If I cut something from outside of NS and then try to paste it into NS nothing happens. But.... I can go to another app and past it there.

All the Ctrl + key combos don't work either.

This for sure is one weird problem.

    Grenadier,

I would upgrade to Netscape 7.02, or Mozilla 1.4.1. Uninstall 7.01 via the Add/Remove applet. Your Profile will be undisturbed.

Post back with any further questions.

    Ramona,

Hello and thanks again for your reply.

I'm afraid I've got several questions for you this time:

I was thinking about up-grading to NS 7.02, but was alittle reluctant to do so because I have NS 7.01
configured exactly how I like it. I'm running a classic skin and some other mods that make 7.01 closely resemble NS 4.75. I was reluctant to change because I was afraid that all the work and research I had to do in order to get NS to what I like most. So... if I delete NS 7.01 and install 7.02 I will keep the same "look and feel" of what I have now? All that's kept in the profile I know have??? And... that doesn't get deleted??? I did have to make some changes to the.... userChrome.css and the..... userContent.css files. Will all that stay the same?

When you say, " Uninstall 7.01 via the Add/Remove applet" do you mean from the Windows Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel?

Is Mozilla 1.4.1 basically the same as NS 7.02? I've been using one version or another of NS forever and I hate giving up on an old friend. Also, I really like the smaller SillyDog versions because I don't use NS Mail, IM and several other standard NS features. I do need Composer though. If I went with standard install of Mozilla, would I have to configure that to be more like the SillyDog Stand Alone versions?

Sorry for all the questions. It's just that at this time I don't have alot of free time to play around with new software.

    Hi Grenadier,

If you're comfortable with 7.01, then reinstall that Version, after uninstalling via Windows Add/Remove in the Control Panel.

Nothing in your Profile will be deleted, but I would definitely make a backup of the Profile before uninstalling 7.01. Always a good plan! ;) Also make a backup copy of your *.css files, and you can replace them after the reinstall of 7.01. I do understand the limited free time for learning new software.

If you have more questions, ask away!

Mozilla 1.5 is awesome. You can choose not to install the email and just install the browser and it even comes with Composer.

    Hi shadowhawk,

I'll certainly second that comment! Mozilla 1.5 makes me a very happy camper.

    Romona and shadowhawk

Thanks for your input once again.

Romona first off, I'm not opposed to learning a new software program. It's just at this time I'm so busy with several research projects that I hardly have time to post on this BBS. I need to have the software I'm now using to work properly. That's why I inquired about the problems I'm experiencing with NS.

Anyways, I'm about to the point where I need to do something because of how frustrating using my browser has become.

I'm most likely going to go with Mozilla.
One question though. Romona suggested version 1.4.1 and in the last post in this thread... version 1.5 was suggested. I am running Win 98SE and know of the problems associated with NS 7.1 and 98SE So, is Mozilla
1.5 stable to use with 98 or should I go with Mozilla 1.4.1?

    Grenadier,

I suggested Mozilla 1.4.1 to you because it is almost identical to Netcape 7.01, and includes many bug fixes not included in 7.01. I was just trying to accommodate your limited free time. :)

Mozilla 1.5 is very stable, and like 1.4.1 has the Resource Leak fix. It also gives you the ability to edit prefs.js from within the browser, using about:config. Mozilla 1.5 is a later release, and therefore more enhancements. It too is very, similar to Netscape 7.01.
You might find that a preference has moved, or other small changes in appearance.

Here are the Release Notes for both Versions, and this may help you make your decision:

    Mozilla 1.4.1, Released 10/10/03
    Mozilla 1.5, Released 10/15/03

Remember to backup these files before uninstalling:
    Profile folder
    userContent.css
    userChrome.css
    plugins folder

    Romona,

Thanks ever so much for your help. Not only with this topic but also for for all the other info you've provided here and over on the SillyDog forum.

I'm going to take the plunge and go with Mozilla 1.5

FIrst though, I think I'll load Mozilla on another machine, just to get an idea how to work with it.

    Have a good weekend,

    Grenadier
