I did not take it as being personal.

It is true that things may run OK without regediting.

But at times leftovers from removed software does ( or at least can ) cause problems.

Also gammaepsilon does bring up a good point. There may well be a limit in size. I have not run into that problem but I will in no way say that it does not exist.

I just did some regediting on the SE machine ( which has not been done in weeks and my Wife was on my case about her favorite program not working right ) and reduced the size of fthe reg backup by 50K. 1,985,378 down to 1,935,xxx.

And that is the RB00x.CAB file itself which is a .ZIP file. And I already see a faster booting and smoother running Windows SE. And the program that my Wife was having problems with is now running very nicely.

Part of the problem was my fault. I had re-installed the program but put it into a new location instead of back into the existing. So the reg was referencing two places. One was right and one was wrong. and depending on which shortcut she selected made a difference where the program started from.

So by deleting the old folder and cleaning up the reg. the program now runs much smoother.

Gotta go get dinner started. Be back later

Gammaepsilon - Sorry man, didn't see your post before I posted. I had to stop in the middle of mine to answer the phone.

I'm not as scared of the registry as I once was so looking around and seeing what's what is a little easier. I expect the occasional pot hole, hope to miss them, but I've learned enough to know I won't. I'm also very familiar with "words of that effect." I've said oops often enough. :)

About the registry size: Does Windows or the registry itself set a limit? Also what is conventional memory that you refered to by the Registry Checker?

I'm going to have to re read your earlier post because at first glance it sounded a bit over my head. But right now I have to take the kids to school so I can get their report cards. I miss the good ol days when schools sent the report cards home. Seems like the more we advance the more we complicate things. :)

    Later

    1) No

    2) Conventional memory

Sorry about my post; I assumed that interest in the registry followed knowledge about the PCs memory. No reason it should nowadays, come to think of it. I got into DOS first.

That's a great link you provided for memory. I skimmed over it enough to know my first question was, well it showed my ignorance concerning memory. I've bookmarked the link to read tomorrow.

I remember a little about dos from the old days but I'm going to have to relearn it. I'm sure a lot has changed. I recognized the high and low memory when I skimmed the article but didn't remember it until I saw it. I've forgotten what went where and who's on first.

I seem to bounce around learning. I have no textbook and so I sorta go with the flow. What I want to do with the registry won't take too long, but memory is going to take awhile for me I think. I've more or less reguarded memory as "its just there," so I'll be seeing it for the first time when I get there. More to a computer than just point and click.

    Thanks for the input.

Interesting thread. I have been thrown into the deep end and had to delve into the registry to fix or at least attempt to fix some problems. I did run a reg cleaner - it was the first time on a machine that has been running for 3 to 4 years now without much in the way of maintenance - there were 150 orphaned entries in the registry that were automatically removed. I even ran defrag for the first time for 2 years. I promise to be nicer to my pc in the future!!

This might be interesting reading - this is my saga with the registry and I still haven't got it quite right but now I am ready to learn more

I even got rid of the %Cache% , %History% and %Cookies% system created sudirs that i have had to look at for over a year now
