    speed

Speed & access. pio #=speed of in & out, higher #=faster. Advanced may be a 'play' on words coz pio3/4 don't sell much these days but advanced is just one letter faster-5. DMA & UDMA are sure diffs. ATA/33 & 66 are the "old" DMA & ATA/100 & 133 are the "new" thang. Odd to as in winxp the PIO mode in DM can show ATA/133 as UDMA6! Are you confused more now?

    ooops

Darn it, ATA/66 DOES require the ultradma ribbon to work, so I was wrong in prior post, ATA/66/100/100 are ultra:eek:

    not confused

    Thank you for responding.
yes i have the ribbon, 80 connector.
And my hd is enabled for ata66 but my hd only performs at
    about 20megs\s with wintune.
dma is also enabled in device mgr, but the setup
    shows advanced pio mode on.
If i turn off DMA, in device mgr then performance drops to 17 mb\s
I assume my bios can't handle anything thats ultra.

    Thanks again

    ata etc

I haven't used wintune, sisandra & hard drive tach is me thing. Can ya tell us about your box? Are ya running a newer mobo? I hope this isn't a pent350 as it will prolly not run much faster. If you have a dma to check in DM check it. What hard drive ata/66?
http://www.tcdlabs.com/hdtach.htm for hard drive tach. Also rotation (RPM) speed is vital too. you will get more from 7,200 ata66 then 5,400 ata66:)

    udma

Have a hewlett packard 533mhz celeron hooked to the internet
    with a usb dsl modem.
two acer computers networked via ethernet\hub share internet
with ICS on the hp unit. all units running win98se.
The acer i use most has an amd k5 pr166 processor i have it cranked up to 200mhz but as you probably know amd doesn't run at the true clocked speed, but it is running at 133mhz actual clock speed. western digital 8.4 gig ata66 hd 5400rpm, dma is turned on in DM. 128mb ram. 256mb ram on hp unit.
v56la MB Ali chipset Ati graphics.
also have an imac to play with had it hooked to the network for awhile. with a program called Dave.
probably will never upgrade this old acer, but might build something from scratch in the future.
Bought this old acer in 1997 barely one step above a 486.
but since i have a larger HD and plenty of ram it does pretty good.
But the bios isn't upgradable, and it is too old to put any more money into.
    thanks for the link!!

    10-4

Yep, the k5 166 ain't gettin' it. Sure fun ta fool with some old stuff now & then. You could do a bios overlay on the thang & get it to see more gigs on the Hdrive & a $18 pci ata/100 controler would set it on fire;) I no, what for!!

That's another problem, I'm using the only PCI slot i have for the network.
    have 2 ISA slots.
Where the modem which i don't use Is, and one empty.
yeah i think western digital sells those controller cards for their hd's
And another problem is that i have to double boot to get all my memory recognized.
Already ran memory test on it and appears that it's all good.
    What For?? Just for fun!!!
That is why I like fooling with them, I can do just what i want to
    Without being concerned what happens.
I had rather Fix up something old than just buy a boring system that runs perfect and nothing to do to It.
Actually We have a 900mhz computer running at work with me
on it and it loads things slower than this old acer does.
I only have about 9 items loaded at boot (running processes)
Opposed to the hp server with about 32.
