My retired mom's old pc is giving up the ghost and I've decided to get a barebones system to upgrade her. She only does email, games like FreeCell and Solitaire (not 3D), and word processing. Currently she has Win95, 128MB ram, and K6-2 300.

    Two systems I'm looking at:
    1. BASIC - Duron 900mhz with 128mb ram, 40gb, (no OS), Soyo K7VEM Pro for about $155.

    2. NICER - Athlon 1800+, 256mb ram, 40gb, (no OS), Gigabyte GA-7VRX for around $260. This will obviously last longer down the road, tho for her needs she may not need the extra power. And of course current $$ is always a factor.

I may re-use Win95, but may end up upgrading her to WinXP. Does XP really run okay in 128MB? Or does she NEED 256MB? Or with her limited use (Juno, etc.) will 128MB be okay?

    Thanks for any insight!

    Dave

Win XP will grind along with 128 MB - the ABSOLUTE minimum and 256 Mb is just fine. RAM is cheap - go for it :)

£ for £ ($ for $ if you insist :D ) the Duron would do your mom just fine for her current PC usage - use 98SE if you have a disk - it will fly with 128 Mb RAM.

The Athlon 1800 would be more than adequate - that's what I am running with XP Pro, Photoshop, etc, etc - admittedly with a Gb of RAm, but it runs just fine.

If you do go for XP consider setting it up with Classic Windows view so that your mom will feel at home with it immediately - this is my preferred desktop.

We've had this discussion before, Johanna, and I wholeheartedly agree with Pete. If you want cutesy, help yourself to Luna (short for Lunacy, you know :D), but if you want a straightforward, easy to use, interface (particularly for a noobie coming from Win9x), Classic is the way to go.

I went with classic, both Start Menu and Desktop. Tried and true is best.
