    Hello All,
When I do a reboot, about 50% of the time, I see the little drum beating saying it is updating my Windows settings...Is this normal?...I thought this only occured when you were adding a program or an update that caused you to restart the computer.

JM - you are correct, I wonder if you have any programs set to update automatically - like virus defs or Spybot, etc.

For peace of mind I would run Spybot and AdAware just to check that some nasty is not messing with your system - be sure to use the latest set of reference files.

This happens to me occasionally too (Win 98 SE). Never seems to hurt anything but I've yet to figure out why it happens. I don't have any programs set to automatically update. I do regular maintenance (probably more than necessary) and know I have no viruses, trojans, worms, spyware, malware, or any of that junk.

Do you run AOL? They are changing ( "updating ") settings all the time (without your noticing--unless you look sharp at shutdown) and the next reboot will show the drum. Probably there are other programs that do that, too.

Certainly not. Every other boot is extraordinary!

If you haven't got a copy, download StartUpList

Create a shortcut and in the Target add the switches /verbose /complete /full.

Before each restarting or shutting down run the app and save the list; displayed in Notepad. Give each saving a new name Start01.txt, Start02.txt and so on.

Hopefully there should be a difference between those occasions when updating occurs and no updating occurs.

My money is on an entry in the RunOnce key or a subkey such as Setup.

    Don't hold your breath though!

Thanks for all the posts...Pete, I checked Spybot & AVG, but they are not checked for automatic updates, but even if they were, would it matter since I only use a dialup connection?...I keep everything up to date, Spybot came up clean with the last scan...I recently did a reformat & reloaded W98se, but did not add Adaware this time...I was under the impression that Spybot was a little more advanced, so I left off Adaware. I haven't seen any spyware or such...I do use Spyware Blaster, I also scan with Highjack This to check for running processes every week.

WJ, I am not on AOL.

gamma, I downloaded StartUpList, but the Target area wouldn't accept the /verbose /complete /full for some reason.

    Regards,
    J. M.

OK, just use StartUpList as is for the time being.
