Network messaging

Hello there,

Just wondering how to switch off network print reporting - our IT guys don't seem to be able to do this!

Basically, when a printout has finished on NT/2000 you get this message box appear with details on the document printed. How can the system be changed so that these messages do not arrive? We're currently printing a lot of things and the messaging is really getting on our nerves.

Are you in a strictly Microsoft network or could you be using Novell Netware for print serving by chance?

 

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's a Microsoft network. Our IT guys have been telling us it's a difficult thing to do. I'm not so sure, myself...

 

In a Novell environment you can configure the client to notify you when documents are printed for each printer you have installed or in general throught the client properties.

NT/2000/XP workstations and server also have a section in the Server Properties to "Notify when remote documents are printed ". To get to this open your Printers applet and right-click in the blank space and seletc "Server Properties ". On the Advanced Tab you'll find the notify check box. I've never played with this setting but disabling it on the workstation may not work. Instead, you might have to get your IT guys to uncheck this option on the NT server, provided your printers are being serviced by an NT server.

They've managed to sort it out, and apparently it was not as difficult as they made it out to be...
...I put it down to sheer laziness on their part.

They never reveal their secrets, I'm afraid.

Is that something about IT technicians? Some kind of grasping for a reason to exist?

 

Only technicians that are paranoid keep secrets. Granted, I don't tell users how everything works but I don't mind sharing information if it doesn't compromise network or desktop security. Some techs don't even share info with fellow techs for fear of them knowing as much or more than they do.

Glad to hear the issue was resolved though.
