I am surprised that so many people talk about a clean reinstall when, apart major problems, a repair is faster, easier, and will retain all the user settings and programs. I found this out after a lot of grief, and I was badly in need of an idiots guide. I hope that what follows can be of assistance to some others.
XP can be restored to its original performance but a few things should be done first.
    1. Have an SP 1 CD available.
    2. Go to the Windows Update site, wait whilst the version of Windows Update is checked but DON'T scan for updates. In the left hand window select 'Personalise Windows Update', then in the right hand window which appears select 'Display Link to Windows Update Catalogue' and click 'Save Settings'.
    3. In the left hand window select 'Windows Update Catalogue'
    4. In the next window select 'Find Updates for . . . etc'

You can now select XP SP1 as your OS and select the required updates to download, and go to the Download Basket.
Here you can browse to and select the place that you want the updates to be downloaded to and start the download. I would recommend an 'Updates' folder, if possible on a seperate partition to the installed XP. i.e. not on 'C'

    5. For safety you should now burn the updates to a CD.

    REPAIR

    Boot from Windows CD
    Your hardware will be investigated.

1st screen - Windows loads files.
2nd screen - Welcome to Setup
Press 'Enter' to setup XP (NOT 'R' to repair!)
    3rd screen - Licence conditions - press F8
4th screen - Select 'R' to repair the installed Windows.
This should take in all about 30 minutes.
    Setup looads files and reboots.

There may be several black screens during the setup, but don't worry! You may also get warnings that some installed drivers have not passed Windows Logo testing. If they caused no problems before, select 'Install'.

Setup reboots after the repair, but ignore the message 'Press any key to reboot from the CD', and Windows will boot after a few seconds, and all will be well.

All your settings and programs should be as before only better!

    Recommended Updates to download:

KB 826939 Update Rollup KB 825119
    KB 828750 KB 823182
    KB 822603 KB 824141
    KB 828035

Note: KB 826939 must be installed after SP1 but before all the others. These are all part of SP2

    Courage,

    Roger

When I crash my computer, and am at the reinstall point, there is usually far too much damage to run the repair- I need a fresh start!

I do frequent backups, and have everything I need to reinstall the software on a handfull of cds. So a "Fatal System Error" becomes a good opportunity to "clean house ". Thanks for taking the time to write out the specifics of doing a repair. You covered it well, and it may help somebody out of a jam one day.

    Hi Roger!

Thanks for the information on KB826939. I download all Updates to the harddisk for future use and this one makes it easier to apply them if the need should arise.

    Roger,
as usual when something is explained to me, it raises a couple of questions:

Does the cumulative patch for IE KB828750 include the cumulative patch for OE KB330994?

    Thanks,
    Christer

    Hi Christer,

I think not. After I had done all the updates that were on my list I went back to Windows Update and took the scan. The resulting list of deficiencies was:-

    KB 819696, 823718, 824105, 330994

However, if you search KB 330994 you find a note which says 'A more recent critical security update is now available'

Sorry I can't be of more help, but I am going to install those four updates anyway.

    Roger

    Hi again Christer,

Good news!! After trying to search on the update site for KB 828750 and being told that no such article existed, I visited the MS Technet site and got the answer.

Quote: "This is a cumulative patch that includes the functionality of all previously released patches for IE "

    Good to know!

    Roger

    Hello Roger!

Reading MS bulletins is difficult and understanding them even more so. I´ve been at it for a couple of hours and found this out:

First of all, KB826939 can only be applied to systems that have none of the included updates installed. If one or more of the updates are installed, KB826939 can not be applied.

After reading Your post and marking the updates included in KB826939 plus the additional ones in Your listings, I had eight more updates.

Three were cumulative patches for IE6, superceding eachother, finally by KB828750.
    Five to go.

Two were updates to Windows Media Player.
    Three to go.

An update to Microsoft Virtual Machine, KB816093, should be installed if MVM is still on the system.
    Two to go.

An update dealing with Windows Script Engine, KB814078, should be installed. Will be included in WinXP SP2.
    One to go.

An update dealing with VBScript Handling in IE, KB318089.
Two different versions of MS02-009 say that the update either will be or has been included in IE6 SP1.
As I understand it, IE6 SP1 is included in WinXP SP1. After having installed the latter, I was still prompted by Windows Update to install the critical KB318089.
Now, was it or wasn´t it included in IE6 SP1?

I haven´t found that information but that it will be included in IE6 SP2 which indicates that it is not included in the cumulative patches.
However, I found that KB810847 (a cumulative patch for IE superceded by KB828750) adresses the same issue but my conclusion is that both are needed.
This is supported by the fact that You were prompted to install it after having installed KB828750.

    A square-eyed,
    Christer
