I posted a previous message regarding this problem.

every time i load up windows 98, the dial-up box kicks in and asks me to connect to the internet.

i've installed spybot and run that. have an up-to-date virus guard in norton and have even run a trojon scanner from a website.

    problem still remains.

the following is a list of my startup programs found in msconfig:

    ScanRegistry
    TaskMonitor
    SystemTray
    LoadPowerProfile
    CriticalUpdate
    ccApp
    ccRegVfy
    POINTER
    NvCplDaemon
    Jet Detection
    StillImageMonitor
    QuickTime Task
    nwiz
    LoadPowerProfile
    SchedulingAgent
    ccEvtMgr
    ScriptBlocking
    SymTray - Norton Systemworks
    Iomega Watch
    Iomega Startup Options
    Iomega Disk Icons
    Refresh
    load= ptsnoop.exe -- i have a pctel modem!

what programs are coursing this dial-up? and why is there two entry's of LoadPowerProfile?..this option points to the same file - Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme

    any help would be great!

In Control Panel>Internet Options, click on the Connections tab. There are some dialing options there. One of them is to dial whenever an internet connection is not present. Maybe that's the problem.

I too have this problem... have since day 1.

    Here's my startup stuff...

    TaskMonitor
    SystemTray
    LoadPowerProfile
    QuickTime Task
    AVG_CC
    WheelMouse
    GSICONEXE
    DSLAGENTEXE
    TeakUI
    LoadPowerProfile
    SchedulingAgent
    TrueVector
    Avgserv9.exe
    ZoneAlarm
    Adobe Gamma Loader

Someone suggested a long time ago that it might be ZoneAlarm looking for updates, but the DialUp box is there long before ZoneAlarm loads, and all ZA settings deny it access to look for updates :-\

What you have starting up at boot is a matter of personal preference, but it really is not necessary to have programs start that you may or may not use during a session. And it could use up resources which slows down your PC.
The bare minimum you need at boot are Explorer and Systray (though some will argue even with Systray). I, personally, think it desireable to have Scanreg, antivirus and firewall also run. I am not sure you accomplish much by trying to suppress LoadPowerProfile since it will probably run anyway, especially if you have PowerManagement on.
Anyway here are lists of what each program does so you can make your own decision.

    http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Uncheck.htm
    http://www.langa.com/newsletters/2000/2000-05-15.htm#2
and I like this list to tell what programs running after start up are doing
    http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm
Remember you can start any program (except Explorer) when/if you need it during a session.

Can't hurt to change it to "never dial" and see what happens. Had a PC that started that, instead of hunting for the culprit, changed to "never dial ", hasnt tried since.

    To richy_kiss_kiss,
It would be either CriticalUpdate trying to find out if there is a Critical Update available, or Norton trying to find out if there is an update available.
Leave both PowerProf entries, it is not a mistake.

    To JimmyHetfield,
you have a DSL modem, good idea to start your own thread.

richy_kiss_kiss --Forgive me. I did not respond to the question you asked, but rather reacted to very long list of programs you have starting on boot.
I think aleekat has given you the good advice about stopping the dialup.
But I still think you might consider cutting down the number of other programs starting at boot.

    problem solved.

seems it was the critical update was trying to connect to the internet.

have disabled it and some others in the msconfig startup.

have also disabled task scheduling as i run norton systemworks once a week.

    thanks all!

richy_kiss_kiss--Thanks for posting back and telling us what the fix was. Yes, Critical Update Notification is a real pain. It also disrupts ScanDisk and Defrag from running smoothly. I uninstalled it several years ago.
Now whittle down the rest of the start up list!! :D Bet you PC will run faster.
