When using Windows 98se and browsing files, either via Windows Explorer, or My Computer or even when opening files via File > Open in applications such as Photoshop, I'm getting this strange problem...

The files are sorted by name, but instead of being asending A-Z, they are displayed descending Z-A. Clicking the Name bar does resort the order, but if I close that window, or use the Back or Up buttons, the view is restored to sorting via Name is descending order

I've tried playing with the Folder Options, resetting to defaults and asking it to base other folders off the one I'm in, but no change :(

I have a strange feeling it has something to do with the registry, but I don't know where to start... any advice?

    Many thanks :)

This may solve your problem: NoSaveSettings

It used to be in Win95's Folder Options... but it did not carry into Win98.

Remove the ;; and space before REGEDIT4 and make sure the very last line is a blank line otherwise the last text line will not be read.

If it doesn't solve your problem then come back. Leave the feature onboard - it is handy - saves hacking into the registry.

BTW, this has only been a problem since shortly after installing my USB modem. The installation went fine, but apparently my VIA Tech 3038 and AMD chipset aren't 100% compatable with my modem... I was advised to apply a patch, which had no effect, then advised to try using a seperate mains-powered USB hub, which does improve things, but not by much.

Would installing Windows 2000 solve this VIA/AMD USB problem? Obviously, it would also save me having to fix this 98se problem at the same time then... :)

Hmmm, we are on to a different topic aren't we?

My DSL modem wouldn't work with the VIA/AMD combo and with the patch so I got a Belkin USB 2.0 PCI card, which uses a different chipset, and disabled the VIA set in the Device manager - problem solved.

Yes, I did wander off topic a little, sowwy for that ;)

But thank you for the USB PCI card advice... this Hub is proving to be quite useless.. I'd still like to know if Windows 2000 users any problems though.

Getting back on topic, I tried adding the NoSaveSettings, but it made no difference to the order of the files :(

If you followed the link's instructions 'To make changes on the fly:, 1 to 6' and find it makes no difference then you have me stumped for the minute - perhaps someone else can chip in here.

Someone else will also need to chip in re Win2000 as what I know about that OS can be put onto the back of a postage stamp. You could pop into the Win2000 forum.

I use PowerDesk instead of Explorer and I have the same problem in both 98SE and XP pro. One time all is fine and the next time it is not.

From the link gammaepsilon pointed to.
HAHAHA . Who ever wrote that does not know Windows too well.

And if you were to makes those changes and used a Scanreg /restore made previous to them then they would be gone anyway.

So when making reg changes that work it is a good idea to delete the old and make new backups.

OUCH !!. Now that I have reminded myself I gotta do that on here. I found and fixed a problem ( bad software un-install ) yesterday and I sure as heck do not want it back.
