That one would be shared with other Norton products. Get rid of it.

I got rid of them and rebooted and the messae came up again. I went back in to rRegedit and searched again, all I see this time os one file named C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SYMEVNT1.DLL

Is that to go as well?

I don't know what's up with this thing  .

These messages are almost always incorrect about win.ini and system.ini in Win98.

The entry is no doubt in the registry.

Go to Start > Run and type:
    regedit

Go to the Edit menu and click Find.

Type "symevnt.386" (no quotes) in the search box and find the entries. When one is found (highlighted), right-click it and choose "Remove ".

Then press F3 to continue the search. Remove all references that it finds until you are notified that you have searched the entire registry.

Yes, it should be deleted as well. I must say this seems to be the sloppiest uninstall of a Norton/Symnatec product I have seen. One of my peeves with Norton, you are not the only one this happened to.

Hint: If at anytime the computer as a problem starting up because of an error, Win 98 has a backup of the registry. All you need to do to access it is to type in "scanreg /restore" at the Command Prompt. and pick the latest time and date using the arrow keys. This backup is created once a day, after 12 AM, for every day the computer is started up. If the editing has happened after this time, it will be needed to be done again.

After the computer has started up without any messages appearing, go into the folder C:\Windows\Sysbckup [hidden folder] using Windows Explorer, and delete files named Rb00X, where X will be a number, then reboot. A backup registry will be created. This way you will have a good working registry backup that is good to use.
If you have a file there named RbBad, do not worry about it, you could delete it as well.

I agree with the sloppy un-install of Norton. But I also think it may be due to an improper install. Or. Installing twice without cleaning out the first install.

    markp62

You beat me but I was thinking about posting the same.

I do the same thing EVERYTIME I install/remove programs or do any type of regcleaning as soon as I find all will be OK.

And after cleaning up after Norton we sure as hello don't want to put it all back in either the registry or the System.ini.

And to those readers that are using XP. It pays to do the same thing with the any restore points.

In fact I gotta check that out as I added two new programs and remove one two days ago. WHY, would I want RPs from three days ago ?

Ok, I did this as Markp62 said I should. :)

As Billybob said what he did though, it brings to my mind that while I was looking through the registry yesterday for the files to delete I noticed file names there connected to programs that have been uninstalled for a very long time now, programs or files connected to programs that we no longer have and that we no longer use. Can I go back into the registry and delete these, clean up? Or should I just leave them all there?

I'd appreciate you input on this if you can reply.

    Thanks again.

I would go back into regedit and do a find for the no longer installed things an clean them up also.

Wait for advice from others here but.

Some of the searches will show an entry that is a sub key of a mile long numbered key in the LEFT Pane. I believe a search for symantec and/or Norton will turn up a lot of them.

    Such as

    !@#$%^12345
    ***---
    ****---
    *****---

Consider the **** in the above as spaces. And the ---- as the sub key.

I have successfully deleted the !@#$%^12345 key with no problems.

But before doing this make very sure that you do have a recent RB000.CAB file and know how to do a Scanreg /restore.

Get Regcleaner. When installed and run, the very first screen will show you all the software you have installed, and stuff you have uninstalled. Remove the entries you know should no longer be there, Norton and Symnatec comes to my mind at this moment.
Then go to the toolbar at Tools\Registry Cleaner\Do Them All. I would not be surprised if hundreds of bad entries are found. Allow Regcleaner to remove them.
This program makes backups of all things removed.

    Markp62,

I did as you suggested and cleaned all the junk from the registry, and yes, more Symantec stuff was there....arrrrrrggggg. Happily it should now be all gone. Thank you so much for all the help! :)

I have one question though, is it ok to do other things on the computer while RegCleaner is working?

    Thanks a million!!

It's fine to use regcleaner while doing other things. It will stall a bit but still progress.

It's much better to use this than doing anything manually in the registry.
