My son is running Win XP Pro and tells me he cannot clear the History items through the normal way.

    Tools-Internet Options- Clear History

He can remove each one manually by right clicking on it and deleting it but not through the tools process.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Thank you, Paul

    Thanks for the site Pete.

He has Roxio & Kaaz but they never caused him problems before.

The only thing he downloaded lately was the new Windows updates.

I think he has something else wrong.

paul43--Does your son use a spyware detector, such as AdAware or SpybotS&D? They are both free. Be sure to use latest reference files.
And, of course, he should have an antivirus program (again with latest virus definitions).
Since he apparently is into file swapping, he could have downloaded a file with spyware or a virus. Kazaa itself is spyware, but generally only reports back on surfing habits, but as mentioned a downloaded file could have introduced other problems.
Concering the History files, if the above do not fix things, he can try to delete the contents of each day's folder in the main History folder.

Yes Welshjim, I had him install, Spybot, AdAware,Reg-Scrub,Spywareblaster. He is not up to date on the Ad-Aware because I have to walk him through their latest update.

Also you mentioned the MAIN HISTORY folder--I cannot find a Windows History folder on my machine (WIN XP PRO) anywhere.
Can you tell me how to find it?

    Thanks,
    Paul

paul43--I run Win98, so sorry I cannot tell you where the History folder is located in WinXP. In Win98 it is C:\Windows\History.
However, if he finds no spyware, virus, etc., then something is corrupted even if my suggestion works.
    Has he run System Restore?
    There also is this site
    http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/537/
However, although it says the fixes are for all versions of Windows, I have the suspicion WinXP puts things in a different place in the Registry.

Thanks Jim, I might just have him try that System restore.
