I use AVG, as I cannot really afford Nortons etc. Recently I noticed that the SYSTRAY Icon was not there yet it is in Start Up. I try to run AVG and it opens then closes after about 5 seconds. Nothing I did resolved this so I uninstalled and tried to install a more recent version but SETUP exits after about 5 seconds. What is going on? The reason I was concerned in the first place is that my PC's performance has dropped - is this a virus/trojan that is disabling anti-virus software first?

    Do the suggested scans.

    This may not be the case here but;

The latest AVG update for the paid version killed my E-Mail scanner yesterday.

The Update/upgrade ( I mean downgrade ) has to have an Outlook Express account in order to ( activate ) keep e-mail scanner fully functional.

I finally got it working on XP but am having problems on the 98 machine.

I will be writing Grisoft today to find out why they messed up a very good program.

I do not. Never have and do not intend to use OE.

Billybob - how did you know the e-mail scanner wasn't working? I have checked mine and it tells me it is fully functional - I have the paid for version plus I downloaded the updates. I do not use OE but have Outlook and Incredimail. Does Outlook keep it functional - I am in a panic after reading this - how did you fix it on the XP machine, Please.

I have just started to use AVG so am not fully aware of all the bits to watch. Thanks in advance.

The AVG Control Center Told me that E-Mail Scanning was not fully functional. And Right click on the e-mail section produced properties and ACTIVATE.

Also it would start up in the Systray colored and then turn gray.

Does Outlook keep it functional - I am in a panic after reading this - how did you fix it on the XP machine, Please.

After getting my Outlook setup in XP it looks like it will keep it functional.

As to the panic. I did not panic but I did get very angry when I found that I had to set up OE. That is one reason that I made the reply that I did.

I got it fixed in XP by going to Help and Support from Start and working my way through OE and Imported my Eudora account info and then it was OK.

On the 98SE machine I went back to NAV 2003 as I did not feel AVG was dependable.

I have contacted Grisoft Tech support about this matter.

Then it reads like you are OK. I did not have OE setup on the XP machine. And not even installed on the 98SE machine. I had no reason to have it on either machine.

Relieved miniB back again ~ BillyBob.

I have just managed to configure the settings for AVG to scan all my mail accounts after the update. I know my icon didn't remain grey but a friend's did and after he double clicked it it coloured again. When I updated mine I had to run the update twice and then I had the coloured icon.

I am not sure if this will help you or anyone else having problems with setting up other accounts to use the e-mail scanner.
I tried to use mine as suggested by AVG i.e. Login in name user/computer - I changed all the other settings in AVG to have my 'Incoming Server' 127.0.0.1 and the 'Incoming Port' to 5200
Each time I tried this my authourisation failed. I altered the Login details to a fixed IP by putting my server in this as given by my ISP - went back to get my mail and everything worked fine - the mail is being scanned now from all my accounts (had to create another server for a separate ISP) This is working with Incredimail too.

Below is a copy of an e-mail I just received from Grisoft.
    Dear Sir/Madam,

    Thank you for your email.

You dont need use the AVG Personal email scanner for scanning emails.
Your emails are scanned by AVG MS Outlook extension.

    - You can ignore faulty conditions of the components. Open the AVG
Control Center program -> "AVG email scanner" ->
choose "Personal email scanner" -> enable "Ignore faulty conditions
    of the plugin ".
    - You can uninstall the AVG Personal email scanner. Run the AVG
installation package -> choose "Add/remove AVG
functions" -> remove "AVG personal email scanner ". You can download
installation file for AVG Proffesional Edition from
    this link: http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl7.php?ver=71

    Best regards,

My query with this would be - When I ran AVG without configuring the e-mail scanner - I didn't know if my e-mails where scanned or not. It is only now that I have configured my accounts that I can see the message telling me they are scanned
I am only ticked to have the message displayed to make sure it was working.

Another point - I downloaded the test virsu last night to check running on the default settings - AVG found nothing even when using the manual scan with ...... I set my accounts up this morning ran a full system scan with AVG and it found the fake virus in the bin !!! Nothing was found last night but with the e-mail scanner configured today it was found

I would have the same thoughts.

But as of right now it seems to be working properly so it might be in my best interest to leave things alone for at least the time being.

On the other machine I may uninstall AVG and go back to the original AVG7 setup that I have and just update the deffinitions.

I do not think I need all of the stuff that the newer version has in it. I only have Eudora Email on that machine also.

I also just downloaded the newest AVG from the link provided in the reply to me.

Somtimes things works better with a full install where the updates may fail.

    I will see maybe tomorrow.
