I`m attempting to install a modem from a Gateway computer that was running Windows ME to a computer that is running Windows `98 upgrade. No updates, if that means anything to this problem.
I found the driver and note tht another person who has used it has the same problemI`m having.
"I have 2 errors in the device manager (Ethernet Controller and PCI Device) that only show up when the card V90/10 card is installed. "
Also the modem doesn`t work properly after install.
The other user doesn`t say what OS he has.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks, as usual.

Are you sure that you have the right driver - 98SE and the correct chip.

See if you can identify the chip - or find a serial no. and go to www.modem-drivers.com - there is a Gateway section there too with 65 possible drivers.

    Thanks, Pete,
That`s where I got the download. The person that uploaded it included several models of Gateway modems that the driver supposedly supported and my #6001856 model was one of them.
I suspect that the driver isn`t compatible with Windows `98 but I don`t KNOW that is the case.
I wrote the guy that commented he was having the same problem, to see if he resolved it, hopefully he`ll enlighten me.If he does I`ll post back the results. I`ll go back to drivers . com and see what else I can find.
    I appreciate the comeback.

I guess I`ll put this modem in the" hate to throw away" box.I didn`t hear back from the guy that had the same problem, and I tried a couple of different drivers that didn`t trip the trigger either.

Try moving your modem to a different PCI slot - you might have an interrupt conflict.

    ;)

Sounds like you may have an HPNA modem.

If you IM your sys serial I should be able to identify it - and IIRC Gateway did have a W98 driver released for it later - but it was not supported by GTW tech support.

I spent 2 1/2 yrs with GTW, there is a way to make it work.

    See if this page helps.

Never mind the S/N - just be sure the part number is correct - if so you DO have an HPNA. These modems are very sensitive to background line noise. Also IIRC the W98 driver did not support the home networking/Internet connection sharing feature.

    Good luck!

Thanks to the both of you for your replies.
    Rockster: I`ll try that.

ProfGab: I`ll try that download on the Gateway support site. It appears it supports Win`98 for this 6001856 modem.
I`m moving the modem from a gateway that crashed to a generic computer. The gateway used ME, the generic is `98.
I`ve tried several downloaded drivers and I remember one that dialed to get on line OK but as soon as it connected it dropped out.
Could it be that I had happened on the correct driver and my line is too noisy?I live out here in the boonies but don`t seem to have any undue trouble on the phones.
I`ll download that `98 driver from the gateway support and let you know what happens.
    Thanks

This may well be the age onld case of a PCI Internal Modem that just will not go from one machine to the other and work.

I believe they become what is called " HARD coded " and will not change.

This says that the modem wants the same IRQ as the Ethernet Card. This happens quite often when the Modem is an Internal PCI.

Where and External Modem WILL go from machine to machine with no problem. At least I have not had any with a USR 56K External that has been on more machines and in more homes than I can really remember.

An External is far more dependable and less subject to line noise.

They may cost more to begin with but over all they are worth it.

I`ll bet you`re right BB, I downloaded the driver and it didn`t make things work. I`ve seen other posts by you, touting the external modems. Someday I`ll own one, but for now I`ll probably go scrounging for something I can make work.
I know a new one doesn`t cost much but it isn`t the principal of the thing, it`s the money.
    thanks to all

    Oh My! Billy Bob

I have here in my hot little hand a US Robotics External Modem!
56K Sportster 00568602. It`s got dip switches, phone jacks in and out and a 9VAC power supply. I assume the dip switches are set OK because the previous owner had it connected and was using it.
I found a driver online for this Model # it is for Win95,and I`m running `98.
    My MOBO has a LPT1, Com 1 Com2 and a USB port.

Here`s the plan until you, or somebody else, changes it.

There`s an upgrade driver also listed. If the `95 Driver doesn`t work I`ll download the upgrade and see if that helps?

The cable connection on the modem is the same as my LPT port, on this computer. I have a cable with the proper ends to use. OK to plug it in there?

What`ll I use for a printer connection If I use that port?
Assuming that I may use a printer with this computer some day.
    Thanks

    ??????

If I am thinking Correctly the modem uses a Serial Port ( Com1 or 2 ) and the Printer uses a Parallel port ( LPT1 ). The Modem cable will not plug into the parallel port.

I never had to load any drivers for the USR external in 98.

It grabed and ran with it all on its own.

Dip switches I never messed with them. Did not have to.

Just need to get the phone cable plugged into the right jack.

Thanks for the reply Billy Bob. I`ll see if I can explain this clearly.

The modem has a 25 hole receptacle, as in female socket
The computer also has a 25 hole receptacle the same configuration.
It`s designated "LPT" by the ABIT LX6 Manual that I downloaded for the MOBO.
Com 1 and Com2 on the computer are both 9 pin, as in male plug.

The cable with the molded attached plugs has both ends as 25 pin male that would plug in to the computer and the modem.

That`s where I got the idea I could connect them OK,

Where I got the cable I don`t know. I`m one of these people that never throws anything away.

Is there an adapter from 9 pin to 25 hole, or vice versa, or a cable with 9 hole on one end and 25 hole on the other?
Or can I plug it in without causing a problem and worry about the printer later?
What about the USB port? I`ve never had anything that needed one. also I`ve never installed an external modem. In case you hadn`t figured that out already :)

Yes there is an adapter for 25 to 9 pin. But you need to be dure that you have a MODEM CABLE. Not just any cable will do.

The do make Modem cables with a nine pin on one end and 25 on the other.

The computer also has a 25 hole receptacle the same configuration. It`s designated "LPT" by the ABIT LX6 Manual that I downloaded

That is a PRINTER port ONLY.

The Modem MUST be connectec to one of the 9 pin serial ports
