When I was using Windows-98 operating system, whenever I turned the computer off I would get a message that said it was safe to turn off the computer now. But after installing windows-98 SE (second edition) I no longer get that message and have to wait until I hear the sound go off. How can I get that message again under 98-SE?

By having a lot of programs running in the background that needs to be shut down before Win98 SE shuts down, which is a real bad solution. The 'problem' is that Win98 SE is much faster at shutting down than Win98.

Thanks Buddy, but I don't have any programs running when I turn off. I'd just like to get that message back that says "OK to turn of computer now." My grandkids don't wait until they hear the sound of the speakers turning off and when I boot up, scandisk has to do its thing.

You could try let your grandchildren see what happens when they don't wait when shutting down the computer and explain that they might damage the computer if they don't wait for the sound :)

Try this. Start\Run, type in MsConfig and press Enter. Then click on Advanced, then look to to see if Disable Fast Shutdown has a checkmark. If not, put one there.

On my computer I have the shutdown patch + Fast Shutdown is disabled using Msconfig. It does not make a difference even after I manually set the wait-time at shutdown to 4 seconds in the registry. In the 15 months I've been running Win98SE I've only seen the 'You may now shutdown your computer' screen about 3 times or so after prolonged gaming where the computer needed extra time for shutting down everything correctly. This included the first 12 months when I had a AMD Palomino 1800+ CPU.

I therefore think the best is if gncrown teach his grandchildren to wait a bit longer before turning off the computer and tell them why they have to wait. I think they will understand especially when they have seen scandisk running and heard why it is running :)

On my Msconfig Advanced, I don't have "Disable fast shutdown"
    I only have:

    Disable System ROM Breakpoint
    Disbale Virtual HD IRQ
    EMM Exclude A000FFF
    Force Compatibilty mode disk access
    VGA 640 x 480 x 16
    Use SCSI double buffering
    Enable Startup menu
    Disable Scandisk aftr bad shutdown
    Limit memory to 128 MB
    Disable UDF system
    Enable Pentium F0 (Lock CmpXchg)

The only one checked is "Use SCSI double buffering "

Then you have installed the Shutdown Update. That option disappears or is greyed out.
