I have a HP Pavilion XL776 that came with Windows 98SE and I upgraded to Windows XP Home. I recently had a total crash and discovered my HP recovery discs were defective so I had to totally start over using Windows XP. I use SBC/Yahoo as my ISP and connect at only at 16.8 or 19.2 (we live waaaaaay out in the country). This morning without warning after connecting online, my computer rebooted twice and gave a blue screen each time saying it was doing a disc check. I have given up on trying to download Sun java but did manage to download the "old" MS java. A lot of the time I will receive This Page Cannot Be Displayed and even though I'm still connected, I have to disconnect and reconnect. I use Trend PC-cillin 2003 as my virus program and have no viruses. What can I do to make my computer run better before I kick it out the door???

As soon as you can, go to:
    Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and recovery
uncheck auto restart to prevent an endless loop of boots when you are having trouble.

Your problems don't sound like they are ISP related. Can you tell us exactly what you did when you installed XP Home? Are your modem drivers up to date? Is there any pattern to how the comp misbehaves?

If you go to Windows Explorer, right click on your OS partition (probably "C" drive, properties, then tools, run an error check. (It will ask you if you want to do it next time you boot) Try that. If those steps don't help, post back, and we'll come up with some more ideas. HTH

Oftentimes an involuntary reboot can be caused by an overloaded power supply or one that is on the way out.
Heavy accumulation of dust and dirt will inhibit proper airflow and cause the same thing by overheating the power supply.
Most any computer repair shop can measure the voltage rails.
A new power supply will run around $20.00 + service charge.
I recommend an absolute minimum of 250 watts.
