hello....well to start off here is my problem....well a few days ago i got a new net-md player from my dad. so i began to get al the stuff out to install the drivers. and then when i went to click on the install it went through the install shield stuff....then i got this error message saying something about an incompatable rpc stub...so i went online to find a fix for it.....welll the install shield site told me to download some dcom98 thing (its surpose to replace some dll file) well the instructions told me to restart my computer into ms-dos mode.....well i did just that and renamed the file (oleaut.dll...if you wanna know) and after i did that nothing happen....all good so far.........................not......come to find out..i couldnt get back into normal windows......i tried everything that i know...i typed in win .......it comes up with the message ( yes or no) and i do yes.......system restarts.......and goes right back into ms-dos again.............did it again with exit..........same thing...........restarts and back into ms-dos.....soo i decided to go ahead and turn it off and then on again but getting into those boot choices....(whne you hold f8...to get a choice to start in normal, dos, or safe mode....) so i chose normal......it took me right back into ms-dos........again......right at this moment i was getting pretty frusterated....so i tried safe mode.....i got into it..but i couldnt do anything in it....(or can i??...i dont really know, i know you can use the network...but cant use the cd drives...) soo i decided to get a win 98 upgrade cd...to like repair the registy..or something like that...........it doesnt even read that!!...it goes straight back to ms-dos.........i tried making a registy on the c drive to copy all the cab files n such (the whole cd practically) and maybe do something from safe mode...well nothing came out of that. when i clicked on the setup file..it said something about not enough resources ......... i tried going into the directory in dos...and typeing in setup......it said "setup cannot run on a private configuation of ms-dos...either restart back into windows or restart into ms-dos mode..(i thought i was already there.......) so now i'm stuck here.....perpetually wondering..............i also tried to change the boot sequence in the bios.......(making the cd drive first) that didnt work either.......so now i dont know what to do......i renamed that dll file back....figureing it would change something....but alas...still the same thing.....it would be a great help if anyone can atleast give me some insite to what the heck is going on with my comp...i'd be grateful......thanks:confused:

Hi MulberryFlyer, welcome. The first thing I would do: When in MS-DOS mode type Scanreg/Restore then press enter. This will bring up a list of past registry saves. These saves are done once per day by the computer. Choose one that was made before you tried to install the md player. This will restore your computer to the way it was before you tried this install. Next check the system requirements of the md player to make sure it is compatable with your system.

Restoring the registry will not help solving a problem that is caused by renaming a file.

Are you sure the file aint called oleaut32.dll...

Did you manage to install the DCOM98 files?

If not, boot to DOS and rename oleaut32.dll to it's original name. Restart your computer to make sure it can boot to windows. If it can boot to windows, restart the computer to DOS and then COPY oleaut32.dll to another place on the harddisk. If you rename oleaut.dll and windows need it for booting your computer can not start to windows therefore doing a copy instead will solve this problem.

The copying/(renaming) of oleaut32.dll is only because there are a few specialized programs (that I do not remember the names of) that only works with a specific version of oleaut32.dll.

What they were trying to tell you to do in the first place was to replace the oleaut32.dll file with one from the Win98 CD. Using System File Checker [SFC.EXE] would have done this for you, without causing the problem you have, or requiring you to rename anything.
However I see you got an upgrade CD. Does it say Upgrade or Update on the CD?
There is a big world of difference on these two CD's. The Update is meant to do Year 2000 Updates on the original Windows 98, this is not an install CD.
The Upgrade CD can do a full install of Windows 98 Second Edition, containing Year 2000 updates and some hardware driver updates.
To access the CD from dos, you need a Bootdisk, download the file for 98. Do not copy the file onto a floppy and expect it to work. Double click the downloaded file with a floppy in the drive and one will be created for you. When booting, use arrow keys to select CD-ROM support.

Boot with the floppy, choosing CD rom support, put in the Win98 CD. Note: during the boot sequence, you will be given the drive letter for the CD. IT WILL NOT BE THE USUAL LETTER, sub the letter for the X below.
The question at this point is this. Do you have the original 98 and want to install 98SE? If so type this in at the prompt.
    x:\win98\setup

Without going into all the replies coming in here for this, it seems to me that Mulberrry flyer has downloaded Dcom98 and renamed it oleaut.dll...Right??? If so this was incorrect.
Running Dcom98 will install Oleaut.dll if memory serves me correctly...

Just curious as to how you actually went about it.
Ignore all the above if I've read it wrong...

    MulberryFlyer,

Where are you? We need some feedback here. While this may seem like a big problem it is really very easy to fix, no matter which scenario of the above the goof happened in.

If your having any problem understanding anything suggested here just say so. An easier explanation can be offered and a broken down "stepXstep" can be given. We just need to make sure it is understood exactly what you've done.
NOTE*Any errors, should be quoted exactly. This will help us help you.

If it is the Upgrade CD, and all you want to do is put the file back. Boot up with the startup floppy which can be created by using the file downloaded from the link in my previous post. Choose CD-Rom support, insert CD into drive, and type in these commands at the A:\> prompt, pressing Enter at the end of each line.
    c:
    cd\windows\system
    extract /y X:\win98\win98_39.cab oleaut32.dll

X is the drive letter assigned to the CD when booting, put in the appropiate letter.
You should get the message "1 file extracted ".
    Remove floppy and reboot.

PCDania - I don't know where my head was when I posted. I meant to suggest that he reinstall Windows over itself. Sorry.

This "some other text" would have helped, but I am going to guess that you did not use the correct drive letter for the CD. When the boot floppy is finished loading, it gives you the drive letter for the CD. The very last thing that appears on the screen is this letter. If you only have one hard drive, and the letter for the hard drive is C:
You will see the line "Diagnostic tools were loaded to D: ", this is not the letter for the CD. If windows was running, D: may be the letter for the CD. However, this boot floppy creates a RamDrive [something like a hard drive in memory], which moves drive letters around. This is what is confusing you.

You will see "Drive [a letter here] = Driver MSD001 unit 0" below that. That is the drive letter for the CD. It may be E:
Use that letter where the X is in the command line I have given you.
Or like this, if the letter given is E: . The CD must be in the drive at this time.

    c:
    cd\windows\system
    extract /y e:\win98\win98_39.cab oleaut32.dll

Unless you get the correct drive letter off of the screen, you will not be able to do anything at all.

Installing windows should be held off for right this moment. Right click on My Computer and select Properties, then click on the Device Manager tab. Look for anything with a yellow splat and post back what you find. If something is wrong there, just installing windows may still leave you with something wrong and still end up in Safe Mode.
