I cannot access the internet due to a WINSOCK problem. I have contacted my internet provider who informs me I cannot access IP addresses due to a problem with WINSOCK.

I have a cable modem with a USB connection.

I am not sure exactly what the problem is except for the above and would like any advice as to what is WINSOCK, what it is used for and how I can correct the problem.

    andsands--What is Winsock?
    http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/W/Winsock.html
But forgetting that, did you make any changes to your PC before the problem started? Deleting certain spyware can cause a problem with Winsock. Here is two fixes for that
    http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.zip
    http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/internetaccess/winsock2fix.html
If they does not work post back and let us know about any error messages you may be getting.
P.S. If you are paying your ISP they really should be solving the problem for you. Otherwise you are not getting what you are paying for.
