I installed an HP imaging software package (Digital camera) / then uninstalled it, and for some reason the .ico extensions are not working properly. Normally an .ico ICON displays the tiny icon in Windows Explorer, but all icons are no longer associated and do not appear. Does anyone know how to setup the association in Folder Types to re-establish icons so I can view them?

I can get you halfway. Open Folder Options>File Types. Scroll down the list and highlight "icon." Click on Edit. Click New. Here you can specify which program opens the .ico files. What that program is normally I don't know. Its not listed and I'm not sure why. Most of the others are listed. Thats why I can only get you halfway. :)

Hope this is what you are looking for. - John

Thanks, but this is not what happened. In Explorer, the .ico files normally show the 16x16 icon whether there is an affiliation or not. If you load an icon editor the programmers will associate the ico extension to their editing capabilities but Windows will still show the individual icons, not the program icon that can edit them.

There seems to be something that will upset Windows, in my case a program that was installed having nothing to do with icons, but nevertheless one that changed Windows preventing the display of the 16x16 icons in Explorer. it happened to me once before and the only way I solved it was to install Windows over itself again. Yuk. There must be a better way.

If you have TweakUI installed, go to the repair tab and use the rebuild icons feature. If you do not have TweakUI go to C:\windows and find the file named SHELLICONCACHE, delete this file, reboot your computer, the file as well as your icons should rebuild.

I tried that and it did nothing. If you view the .cur file association in Windows 98 you will not see any program attached to it, but .cur association is there. It also means when you look at the cursors directory using Explorer, the actual cursors will appear. These are 16x16 images that appear, like the 16x16 icons should appear but they don't. I even tried the backup registry but that did not fix this annoyance. While it may mean nothing for most people, I am involved with many graphics programs and quite often have to use and be able to see these tiny icons in their directories. I suppose the reinstallation of Windows will be the ultimate fix but maybe someone out there knows where this tiny problem comes from. Thanks for the info.

rcerrato's fix should work. You may have to boot two or three times before ShellIconCache is rebuilt - mine rarely works on only one boot. Reason? No idea.

If you like I can send you the 4 registrykeys that defines the .ico extension in the registry. The files will be send in a single zip-file. Just send a mail to pcdania@hotmail.com.

All you have to do is executing the files and say Yes to installing them. I recommend taking a backup of the registry before installing the files as one can never now what happens.

I run the Danish language version of Win98SE. There does not seem to be anything specific language related to aforementioned registry keys.

    Hurrah!
Thanks to PCDania for the 4 registry keys that define the .ico extension. My tiny icons are back.
