    No--I am talking about html "file" icons that are located inside of folders. When you go to click on a "file" icon it will start the program of choice to view that html file (or any other type of file for that matter). My program of choice starts ok and displays the file, but the icons are wrong.

    I think the blame can be put on Office. Keeping in mind that yours may vary as my version of office is 2000. Here's my registry nfo for the keys involved:
    ===========================
    This is the .htm key:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm]
    "PerceivedType "= "text "
    @= "htmlfile "
    "Content Type "= "text/html "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm\OpenWithList]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm\OpenWithList\EXCEL.EXE]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm\OpenWithList\FRONTPG.EXE]

    ====================
    I think I can assume that once office was installed it took control of managing the icons for these extensions. You can see they cross reference each other and if any keys or subkeys were missing there'd be a problem. Not to mention the files that these default icons are being pointed to if the paths or the files were gone, there'd be no icon.

    You may want to TipToe through your own registry just for look see. You may notice something amiss. Just please make sure you have a current restore point and if you find the need to experimentally edit, export the key first, so you can undo what you did should the need arise.

    =================
    I'm putting the above nfo out there, do with what you will. I hope it helps somewhat.

    I also found this but since I don't have the a problem with my icons and my registry entry's differ I have no need for a Quote:Default Icon.....but in an effort to be thorough here it is [cut N pasted]:

    http://www.uninet.net/~blaisdel/RegTweaks.htm

    Questions: I reinstalled XP Home version and now all html files have only a default icon instead of the "html document" icon as seen in url.dll. The system also will not recognize any icon selected via the "change icon" operation from folder options.

    Answer: I am going to assume that this applies only to the icon you describe or is it for all program association icons?

    Be sure you have permissions set to administrator to make these changes.

    If you have the proper permissions, open the Registry Editor and;

    Navigate to
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm\PersistentHandler
    In the right hand pane double click on the default and be sure the value is:
    {eec97550-47a9-11cf-b952-00aa0051fe20}
    Do likewise for HTM, HTT, and HTW if you use that extention,
    {eec97550-47a9-11cf-b952-00aa0051fe20}
    If under any of these extention types there is a prehandler for an IconCache or ShellIconCace, delete those values after backing up the registry string.

    Next navigate in the system registry to:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\DefaultIcon
    Be sure to backup the this registry string
    Place the Default Icon file in the right hand pane as:
    %SystemRoot%\system32\url.dll,0
    Close the Registry Editor and reboot the system.
    The default icon should now be what it is supposed to be.
    If it isn't, open the registry editor and increase the increment from 0 to 1 as below:
    %SystemRoot%\system32\url.dll,1

    Changed the registry as above post--no change whatsoever. I really appreciate the help--but I think Office XP has decided to do what it wants with these icons.

    To Static

    Restore thumbnail view. See fix #17 on the right side:
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

    It's worth a shot.

    ==============

    Cool utility, but it doesn't support .jpg files.

    Looks like Gene and I are pretty much s@rewed, thanks Micro$oft...
