I want to install Norton's latest SystemWorks suite to replace the pre-installed McAfee software. I have previous versions of Norton (NAV, Utilities, etc) in a file/folder copied from my old HD.

I am planning to uninstall McAfee in totality first before installing the Norton. I will use the uninstall feature found on McAfee together with Add/Remove programs where necessary. Will this give a completely clean uninstall?

It is my understanding that installing the new Norton software automatically removes any and all old Norton files. Is this true?

I also realize XP/Home which is my OS has some of the same features as Norton, such as Password Manager, GoBack etc., and am wondering which ones are superior and/or work better. If I do a complete install of the Norton Suite should I anticipate any conflicts with my OS? (I have the option of a Customized Install of course.)

I am all too aware of the havoc that could ensue by following the wrong sequence which is why I am asking these questions!

Can anyone help me here? :)

In the last few weeks I've installed NSW 2003 on several computers. Though I greatly prefer V-COM 5 since it uses far fewer resources on slower computers and seems less intrusive, the installations of NSW went very smoothly, even on machines with a previous version.

But generally speaking, it is best to remove all you can of previous installations. AV is deeply embedded software and conflicts with previous incarnations occur often.

Norton's GoBack is compatible with XP's System Restore, but both are not needed and GoBack is preferred by many.

XP's firewall is good software, but one-way. It only protects from incoming, so it should be disabled since 2 firewalls are not needed and can lead to configuration nightmares.

It sounds like you are on the right track. You might also consider using a registry cleaner that will allow you to remove references to the previous AV's specifically (RegCleaner or RegSeeker) and consider deleting the program folders from Program Files and Application Data to prevent any conflict of older files with newer. And your idea about using the manufacturer's uninstall programs from their sites is a very good way of removing stubborn registry entries that the usual uninstallation leaves behind.

It is also not too difficult to go back later and uninstall NSW 2003 and reinstall if your preferences about options changes. This has never lead to any problems for me.

Thank you Abraxas, for your helpful reply.

I neglected to mention in my original message that I use Netscape 7.1 for email. Reading the Norton User's Guide I note that NAV does not support email connections using SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) which Netscape does. The Guide recommends disabling NAV in this case.

Since most virus attacks come through email does this mean with SystemWorks I have no virus protection? Is SSL sufficient? Or is it provided elsewhere with the OS?

    Any comments or suggestions welcomed.

    This is my two cents.

    a) Using McAfee uninstaller and Add\Remove will not completely remove McAfee.
The Registry has many leftovers from McAfee.
Go to McAfee page and get the instruction on how to manually remove McAfee.
I found over 100 entries in my Registry after I used McAfee uninstaller and Add\Remove.
Be sure to backup your Registry first.

    b) In Norton’s manual it says it is best to remove any existing Norton’s first.

    Mopar,
Thanks for the useful info. I went to the McAfee website and browsed for about 30 mins and couldn't find anything to do with manually uninstalling McAfee products (should I be surprised?):)

Do you have a handy link I could use?

    Many thanks,
    Lochinvar

This should do it for you -

    http://us.mcafee.com/default.asp

At the top click on Support, on the next page near the centre of page you will see Technical Support.
    Choose your product etc.

Watch for the pop ups, sure happy I ditched Mcafee along time ago.

Thanks again, mopar. I printed out the instructions.

I did an Add/Remove uninstall, which went very well and installed the Norton SystemWorks.

    Appreciate your help!:)
