    Hi,

I know this is a very lame question, but......

In MS Word, Office XP, how to I take a list of stuff and get Word to list items in alphabetical order????? Highligh (select all) and then what????

I know the numbering and bullets and stuff, but do you think I can remember how in the world to alphabetize a list of anything???

Sorry for this but I've searched enough already. Everywhere I go, I read on how you can use Word to build interstellar rockets or whatever but nothing simple like how to alphabetize. :D

    Sincerely,
    Randy

I have now paid for a year of this wonderful forum. How come I'm not listed as a contributing member??? Maybe it takes a few days. Beats me.

Copied from Word help files, searched for "alphabetize" and then the sub-entry, "Sort lists or tables ":

    Sort a list or table
    - Select the list or table you want to sort.

    - On the Table menu, click Sort.

    - Select the sort options you want.

Oh, for crying out loud!

You know....I was right there, too and didn't catch on.

I have obviously entered some sort of accelerated aging stage or something. :D

    Thanx, Miz!

    Sorry for the hassle.

    PeteC,

I don't know. You think moderating the boards is sort of contributing.......you think??? :D

OF course it is! That's a no brainer!

(actually, for what it costs for a yearly contribution vs. the hundreds of dollars I save from the advice from the fine folks here.......I'm almost ashamed to have brought up the contributing thing)

Hey, one more Word question, related to the original post.

When I go to number a list of items, how come I always end up with around a 5 or 6 character spacing between the numbers and the items, only upon and after the 100 mark???

How do I fix this glitch??? It looks terrible this way.

    Thanx in advance,
    Randy

to get rid of those extra spaces in Word 2000 i go to the Format menu, then Bullets and Numbering, then i click on the bullets or numbers which i would like to use and i click on Customise.

A dialog box should opens up and from there you can set the indent of both the bullets position and of the text position. To reduce that space, reduce the indent of the text more close to that of the bullet.

Hope in XP it's the same!

    Nope,

I just don't sem to be able to get it right. Great suggestion and, true, all kinds of adjustment there but when I reset anything over 100, the ones before 100 sometimes get botched and so on.

    Please????

Does anyone know why, in this magnificent program, one cannot ask someone to list between 100 and who-knows-how-many items and then simply number them for reference? I mean to be able to do it without looking like garbage with anything listed as 100 or over having a huge space between the number and the text??

It doesn't sound like too much to ask, does it??? It should be automatic. Why the playing around necessary??? Geez! This is really frustrating me already. I remember the same thing happening with 2000, if I'm not mistaken.

Can anyone help me with this problem. The bullets will work just fine, all the way down, but to be able to reference anything in the list(s) by number?? No way, no how, not without looking like kindergarten class did it.

I think I know what the problem is!

What I failed to tell you all is that I am not creating a list, but rather copy/pasting a list from Notepad.

Apparently I thought you all were psychic and knew exactly what I was doing.

I am using the Advanced Directory Printer program to generate a list of folders from a given drive. I then copy/paste the results from Notepad into MS Word and then go to number the list.

Now can anyone help me? Is there a better program for this task or a better method?

I will check back soon, after I wash the egg off my face. :D

    Sorry, everyone!
