    Hi,
After upgrading to Win2k from Win98 im having problems with the network.

The network consists of 2pc's linked via crossed cable. Its for file and print sharing only so no logon's etc are used.

For some reason the Win 98 pc wants a password to access my win 2K pc files. I have been through and checked and there are no passwords set for networking, nor have there ever been any. It seams that win2k has set one and i dont know what it is.

I can happily browse the win98pc over the network and can browse my drives through the network from my pc but as soon as i try to see my drives from the win98 pc, it wants a password.

as i said we dont use logons, previously the 2pc's automatically logged on. I have set win 2k to log on automatically assuming its always me, in win 2k i am set as an administrator.

All password boxes on both pc's are blank and have always been. Ive tried using no password on the win98pc to see my 2Kpc but it still doesnt work.

    any ideas folks?

    Stuart.

ps. thanks to the folk who gave responces to my last query - very helpfull.

    Hello,

Try enabling the guest account on the Windows 2000 PC.

Go to Control Panel, Users and Passwords, Advanced, Advanced button, Users, and double click 'Guest' and untick the 'account is disabled'.

Sorry for my poor explanation, I'm not 100% at computers, but that is how I got round this problem of Win98/2k networking.

    Hope this helps.

stuartsjg - NT security (NT4/2K/XP) is really designed for a larger, domain operated network and one of it's quirks is that it demands to know Who is trying to connect.

The 98 PC will have to be logging in with a username and NON-BLANK password. The 2K PC will either need that exact username/password added to the local users folder or the guest account enabled.

98 will continue with the same share password protection (or lack of it) that it has always used so the 2K PC should be able to connect to 98 just fine.
