I have McAfee Firewall installed which has an option to control all programs which try and access the Internet.

When I am not connected to the net, suddenly my 56k modem just starts to dial out without any input on my part.

I have a feeling that this has got something to do with svchost.exe in the system32 folder.

In McAfee it says it is a Generic Host Process for Win32 Services v5.1.2600.0

Does anyone know what this is and why it keeps trying to dial out (if it is) and do you know a way of keeping it under control without having to make McAfee stop it. I just dont want it to access the Internet in the first place on its own accord.

When the McAfee popup appears, it tells me what that program is trying to do and it says something like:

incoming TCP/IP, to port 2869 [ephemeral], from port 1389 [ephemeral], IP address 192.168.0.155
    or
incoming TCP/IP, to port 2869 [ephemeral], from port 1389 [ephemeral], IP address 192.168.0.155

    What can I do?
    Thanks

svchost.exe is called a Generic Host Process because it's a wrapper for multiple small services. You may have 1 or 3 or 5 or more instances running on your PC at any given time and there is no easy way to tell exactly what is running inside of any of them or which instance is triggering your modem to dial out.

I think if you set the modem connectoid to never automatically dial a connection (or however that is worded) you will stop the problem.

    Jetheat,
I had a similar problem with my dial up trying to dial up when I first started up. After many hours and tips from everyone, I discovered that it was McAfee's virus program dialing up to the internet in order to update its new virus files. I would suggest that you check all your programs that update- ie. spyware, adware, windows update, etc. and make sure they are not set to automatically update. Of course you then have to remember to manually update every couple of days, but I don't find that a problem.
Good luck, of course this might not be the problem, but it is worth a check.
