I have a problem after installing an old copy of CeQuadrat recording software for my sony rewriter (about 2 years old).

I have uninstalled the software, but the "Device or Application Disabled" baloon.

How do I disable the baloon, or sort this out?

    Cheers

These things can be hard to troubleshoot. I've seen several Gateways with this message about EZ CD Creator out of the box.

Go to Device Manager and see what drivers may belong to your program. You may want to "Show Hidden Devices" under View.

Go to Driver Details in each and copy down the names of any non-Microsoft files the driver may use.

Then, uninstall the drivers, search for and delete any of your listed driver files, and, if necessary, search the registry and remove any references to the deleted files.

    Fun, huh?

Isn't there a way to just disable the balloon prompt we are talking about?

I realise that the device isn't working properly, that much is obvious, but I don't want to be reminded of that every time I log in.

    Cheers

There may be no way to disable an error message without solving the problem since the error will remain.

But possibly disabling all balloon tips will get rid of that annoyance. There is a script, #11, that will do that (and an "undo" if you change your mind, by editing the file in Notepad to change the value to 1 instead of 0):

String worked, but although the balloon stopped appearing, the icon still appeared in the task bar.

So I "Undid" that, and tried the manual deletion of driver files & registry strings etc. works fine!

Thanks for your time man, although there is one other question:

I have a Sony CRX 140E Re-Writer, any ideas where I can get software/drivers to get this working? I've tried searching with google etc, e-mailed Sony (no reply), CeQadrat (not interested).

I don't want to go & buy another writer when this one works fine (in '98 & 2K).

    Any Ideas?

Glad you got that sorted and thanks for the reply.

That seems to be a normal, internal IDE CD-RW. The drivers required should be minimal and included in XP. Does it appear in Device Manager?

    Yes it does under:

    Sony CD-RW CRX140E

It still appears that way after installing the CeQuadrat WinON CD software that came with it. After installing it, WinON CD says "No SCSI device found "(!!!!????)

Do you think I should try installing Nero or something generic like that?

I'm not familiar with the software you mentioned, but Nero has a "choose recorder" option. Anything like that?

I wonder why it's looking for SCSI. It could be referring to an SCSI virtual image drive rather than a physical drive. Is your WinOnCD version 5 or above?

Does your CD-ROM show in My Computer?

As a staunch Nero supporter, it certainly wouldn't hurt to download the trial. Version 6 is a bit confusing in that there are several parts to the total package, but just part one contains all you would need for a trial of the burning software:

    Woohoo!

Nero does it all, no probs.

Sorry I took so long to reply, but I've had to reinstall my machine....

last weekend I contracted a virus, can't remember what it was called, but I had ZonAlarm finding files trying to connect to the internet:

    Svcinit.exe - keylogger
    Mssys.exe - Trojan

So I did what I always do (safest possible way in my opinion) - fdisk, format, reinstallation - before giving it to anyone else.

So, that's ended up taking me a whole week (trying to back up my files was an experience, but greatly appreciated now!), but I'm back up'n'running and I've just installed Nero 5, the drivers were there, as you say -winXP has them built in.

    Marvellous job, cheers again mate.

    Dig.

Oh, and you asked what version WinonCD I have?

Version 5, but I can't remember what build it is. Irrelevant now though.

    :D
